Work Begins On Jal-Cooper Cemetery Fence

The Jal Cooper Cemetery enclosure project started on March 15 and 16 with four inch pipes set in cement for the front crosses and two inch pipes as a grade. Volunteers cleared gravesites while a lunch was prepared. A water well will power a windmill and tank to irrigate trees, and the cemetery association seeks more donations of time gear and money.

Big Inch Pipeline Progress in California Fails to Start on West End

The Big Inch Pipeline from Eunice New Mexico to Blythe California advances on the California side but 24 inch pipe cannot be laid yet due to pipe scarcity. A 16 inch feeder line reaches from Jal to Pecos River and from Eunice to Fullerton Field with new equipment including 16 trucks and a ditching machine. Four compressor stations are planned at Eunice Jal Keystone and Fullerton Field with completion forecast for the fall.

Oil Well No 13 Begins Drilling Near Hobbs Highway

Henry Norton reports Anderson-Pritchard Oil Corporation has started drilling for Oil Well No 13 in Wells Leases four miles north of Hobbs Highway. Surface pipe is set and drilling proceeds toward the Ley Pay Zone, reaching about 8 600 feet as work appears to continue.

Juniors Stage Me and My Shadow Play for Banquet Funds

The Juniors of Juniqgy Class presented Me and My Shadow in the school auditorium on Friday March 31 under Mr Keith Requa. Cast included Sid Stormes Juanita Johnson Leck Jones Jackie Curright Lola Cody Juanita Biddle M L Moore Max Miller. Proceeds support the Junior Senior banquet and prom. Leck Jones thanked Mrs Marshall for help and presented her a bouquet of sweetpeas. The Juniors also honored sponsor Mr Requa with two shrubs for his yard. They thanked Mrs Fellert and Sally Wray for advertising and Autoware Supply for stage props loan. influenza epidemic caused postponement from March 14 to 21.

Injured Jal High Athlete Hurt in Home-Made Pistol Accident

Jal High School athlete George Montgomery sustained a left leg and hip wound Sunday afternoon when a home-made 22 pistol discharged after being dropped during rabbit hunting near Jal. He was driven to Robinson- McClure Clinic in Kermit and returned home March 18, resuming school later that week. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Montgomery.

Jal Schools Close For Week

Jal schools shut for the rest of the week after an influenza epidemic hit the district. Over a quarter of students and many teachers absent, with plans to make up lost time before spring term. Superintendent Burke says Easter holiday time will be used for catch up and classes will meet on Saturdays March 22 and 29.

The town of Jal New Mexico proclaims April 12 to 20 as Clean Up week. Sponsored by the Women’s Club with town officials Fire department and Boy Scouts cooperating. Red Cross Breakfast Drives Support for Local Drive

Red Cross workers plan a March 20 breakfast at Butler Cafe led by John R. Fulmer of the Church of Christ. Attendees selected donors and two booths were set up on opposite sides of the street. El Paso Natural Gas donated 200 dollars. additional oral contributions will be announced after March 31.

Band Members Attend Eunice Clinic

Fourteen of Jal High School band’s forty-one members attended a County Band Clinic in Eunice on Saturday March 8. Illness kept many others from attending due to school closures from Monday through Friday. The attendees learned instrument techniques from special instructors with morning sessions before the evening concert. Local members joined Monument players. bands were split into Red and Blue groups. The Blue Band played in the afternoon and the Red Band performed the concert that evening featuring The Calf of Bagdad overture and the Klaxon March.

Brooder House Fire Destroys 105 Chicks

A gas heated wooden brooder burned at Mr. S. R. Cooper’s place early Friday morning March 7. Of 105 chicks only 27 escaped the net pen but are in poor health. Mrs. Cooper had just received the chicks from A. B. Harmonson Hatchery on March 4 and vows not to order so early again.

Jal To Receive D D T Sanitation Spraying In April

Hobbs based Mr. P. E. Alexander will commence D D T spraying in Jal from April. Last summer’s program yielded satisfactory results in Carlsbad and Hobbs. This season extends to Eynigs Jal Kermit Andrews Seminole Seagraves and Brownfield with spraying as needed or on regular intervals.
