Southeastern N M Education Association Meets in Carlsbad

The eighth annual meeting of the Southeastern Education Association for Eddy Chaves and Lea counties took place in Carlsbad on April 3 1947. Edward C DeMuth presided a full district program was presented. Eunice will host next year and Julian Caton was elected President for 1948 with Charles Brown and Mary William Bryant nominated to the executive committee. Ballots will be mailed to members.

Jal Students Attend Artesia Music Festival

Jal High will send students to Artesia New Mexico for an April 11 12 music festival at Artesia High School. The event features 20 bands 20 choruses and many soloists with free daytime programs and a paid evening performance at Morris Field. Students will perform piano and brass solos among other events with admission 30 cents for students and 50 cents for adults.

Senior Class Play And Skate Saturday March 29

The senior class planned a day trip to the sand hills for fun then traveled to Kermit for roller skating. Mrs. Marshall and her two young daughters joined the group. After delays the event finally occurred with simple refreshments and hot drinks described in lighthearted terms.

Clean-Up Week Planned by Jal's Women's Club

Mrs Clarence Armstrong president of Jal's Women’s Club announces Clean-Up Week to residents of the Corner Post town in New Mexico. Families are urged to tidy yards and alleys and place trash by barrels for pickup. Boy Scouts will assist. Chairs are Mrs Tommie Knight west side and Mrs Walter Pendleton east. L J Calley at the city water office handles inquiries. Local oil firms and businesses are asked to donate equipment. Special treats are planned for scouts helping to beautify the town.

Freshmen Class Awards For Ivanhoe Project Crafts

Freshman students completing projects on Ivanhoe displayed knight armor ram ear farmhouse fields adobe house monastery and period furnishings. First prize James Hall earned for knight in armor secondary prizes went to Lloyd Fink Mary Lou Hedgepeth Maribelle Goin Barry Pender Harold Gene Gillit and third prize to Jack Hirris Wayne Elis. Three top projects named Clothes of the Period Furni ture of the Period and Throne of the Period by Pauline Embry Sue McNeill Dear Belle Humphreys Betty Carter Jimmie Lee Shoemake and Mary Joyce Lake.

Shorthand Students Fill Out Applications for Test

On April 3 five of six shorthand class members completed Merit System of New Mexico test applications. They supplied for stenographer and ist tests. Other interested individuals should follow with applications and test details.

Dr A A Dulaney Addresses Jal High School Assembly

Baptist minister Dr A A Dulaney of Roswell New Mexico spoke to Jal High School on Wednesday March 26. Student Anna Vee Johnson introduced Rev J D McCullough who introduced F O Polston. Dr Dulaney posed three questions urging self examination and better conduct.

Public Health Alerts on Botulism Canning Practices

New Mexico public health notes report four botulism deaths since January and urge home canning safety education. They call for boiling home canned foods 10 to 15 minutes before use, discourage tasting before boiling, and promote pressure cooker gauge testing before the season.

The First Methodist church choir directed by Mr Requa presented an Easter cantata Calvary on Easter Sunday. Requa led the organ and choir in a program celebrating the Resurrection with traditional hymns and choral parts.

Jal Rotary elects Brady President and stabilizes board

At a Jal Rotary Club meeting on April 25 Dr. J. T. Brady was chosen President for the year starting July 1 with O. M. Stewart as Vice President and John Blocker elected Secretary for the coming year. Directors include Guy Schulze John Benton and John Curtis. Retiring President K. B. Walker becomes a board member for the ensuing year.

Car Hits Truck Near Lovington Night Crash

O M Stewart of Jal driving east on April 29 two miles east of Lovington spotted a moving car with bright lights that suddenly shielded a stalled Martin Construction Co. truck from view. He hit the rear of the truck causing radiator and fender damage to his Studebaker. the truck from Albuquerque suffered no damage.

Juniors Celebrate Play Success at Jal High School

The Jal High School junior class celebrated its play Me and My Shadow with a March 21 party in the Home Economics building. Purple and yellow decor, purple punch, and a large cake reading JUNIORS 1946-1947 accompanied dancing and games. Juanita Johnson poured the punch and Mrs. L. K. Requa cut the cake. one senior guest described as a social outcast attended.

Jal High Choral Club Debuts At First Public Appearance

Jal High School Choral Club under Mrs J T Becer with Miss Erma Hon accompanist gave its first public performance on March 25 at First Baptist Church. They sang Ave Verum and rehearsed Hallelujah Chorus for the county choral gathering at Eunice, with Nocturne in progress awaiting music.

Twelve Jal girls met in IOOF Hall to form a secret Theta Rho Club for ages 12 to 18. Mrs Pendleton and Mrs Stanley assist as sponsors. initiation planned for mid April with a $2 registration fee granting charter member rights.
