Street Work Begins With County Aid in Jal

Jal streets are being graded with county aid after a Civic Club committee met city commissioners. Main streets graded once, further oiling planned. County will allow three grader days monthly. city and merchants cover operation and rock hauling costs.

Water Pipe Buried Fourteen Inches Advised

Street Commissioner Bill Collum urged residents to bury water and gas service lines at least 14 inches deep as grading of Jal streets continues. A shallow water pipe was broken by a grader, delaying the work until corrections are made.

Wilburn Dennie Hurt in Gas Line Blast

Wilburn Dennie was injured when a gas line broke on the Kan Mex oil lease. Sand blown into his eyes damaged the cornea and doctors reported serious injury. He narrowly avoided blindness from the blast incident this week.

Civic Club Discusses Park and Street Improvements

The Civic Club met Tuesday night to review street improvement plans and gardening efforts. Nurseryman M. J. Hadley of Artesia advised on spring planting and offered free landscaping guidance. a street committee said work would begin Wednesday. Senior play practice started at Jal High School with The Girl from Childs selected for the production.

Miles Vetoes Part of Bill To Cut Book Aid

Governor John E. Miles explains his stance on the text book fund bill in a letter to Superintendent J. L. Burke. He says he struck the clause directing at least 150000 annually to higher learning from the Federal Minerals Leasing Act but kept 50 percent of the fund for institutions. He notes revenue from the act should cover free textbooks and supports free books for elementary and high schools. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Students Plant 300 Baby Trees Grow Contest

About 300 baby trees four teen inches high were handed out Friday for the Baby Tree Growing Contest sponsored by Superintendent J L Burke. Students from second to tenth grade set trees over the weekend with early reports showing leaves sprouting.

Perk Sets Example For Homes

Grubbing and clearing work on the city park continued this week after planting of 200 trees was completed. Sidewalks will be laid and other improvements made as soon as mesquite catclaw and bear grass is removed. Artesia who landscaped and planted the trees in the city park has offered his services free to any resident of Jal in helping plan a landscaping program in that person's home.

Jal Area Drilling Week Totals 23 Rigs and 3 Completions

The Jal area reports 23 rigs active with three completions and one location in the week ended March 16. Wells listed include Anderson & Prichard No. 5, Amerada No. 1-B Stuart, Culbertson & Irwin Henry No. 3, Continental No. 2-B-27 Jack, Great West Products No. 2-B Leonard, Gulf No. 4 Stuart, and Humble No. 4 Williams with depths from 500 to 3,900 feet.

Methodist Church Dedication Set For Jal Building

Dedication services for the Methodist Church of Jal are scheduled for the third Sunday morning in April with Rev. L. B. Craven presiding elder of the district. The debt on the church has been paid off by the W.M.S. who contributed about $300 this year. Former pastors and friends are invited to attend, said Rev. C. Y. Butler.

Cut In Insurance Rate Expected After Inspection

The improved water system protection and better organized fire department are seen as raising marks on the record. While some red tape remains, a lower rate is anticipated due to the enhanced protection from the water tower and department training.

Firemen Push to Strengthen Jal Volunteer Fire Protection

Jal volunteer firemen expand coverage by mapping half the city to locate plugs and hazards. Each week a firefighter will inspect a store and recommend fixes while another member learns its layout for faster response. The group seeks a curbside parking ban within fifteen feet of fire plugs and reports strong meeting attendance.

Local Ranchers Host Saturday Calf Roping Rounds

A group of Jal area ranchers started Saturday afternoon calf roping events drawing a large crowd. Contests run each Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the grounds half a mile south of Jal on the road to El Paso Natural Gas Camp.

Claud McGee Injured In Jal Wreck On Hobbs Jal Route

Claud McGee was bruised with a stiff neck and facial lacerations after a car wreck about six miles from Jal on the Hobbs Jal highway. His woman companion from Jal suffered nervous shock as the car overturned and was badly wrecked.

Jal Team Enters Eunice Tourney

Jal will be one of sixteen squads in an independent basketball tournament at Eunice High School gym Friday. Lions Club sponsors the event. W. S. Moore left for Phoenix after learning his sister was gravelyill, no update on her condition. Mrs Randy Johnston drove to Odessa with her mother Mrs A Q Cooper to visit relatives. Mr and Mrs J D McClintock visited Newcastle during the weekend.
