Growth in Jal demands more power as existing lines reach capacity. New Mexico Electric Service Co will install a highline to the Skelly plant north of Jal to handle current and provide standby emergency service. Post holes are finished and lines could be energized in about a week to ten days.
State Highway Department workers began paving the Jal to El Paso Natural Gas Company Camp road this week. Governor Miles announced the project two weeks ago at Hobbs. The twenty two foot road will reach Main Street and improve town access, with Main Street paving possible curb to curb pending two thirds owner approval.
Jal Golf course hosts a club members tournament with 54 players beginning this week. Invitations went to all members and a 50 cent entrance fee is required. An 18 hole qualifying round will place players into brackets before the club event.
Rev C Y Butler and twenty two Cub Scouts returned noon Wednesday from a two night fishing trip. They traveled 52 miles from Jal on the Pecos River aboard a large school truck. They cooked and lived in the open and reported poor fishing. Chaperones included Floyd Ray Stewart Weldon Butler Francis Dunivan Fatso Gotener and Rev Butler. Mr and Mrs Frank Goodner joined for dinner on day two.
Charles R. Hamner of Wichita Kansas moves to Jal to serve as minister and resides at the church parsonage reporting a warm reception. City Council approves a liquor license payment plan allowing $200 at start and $200 bond at six months.
Jal received a long awaited heavy rainfall on Monday afternoon as a ominous black cloud approached. Fearful residents sought shelter in the Petty home storm cellar until the storm passed and rain proved beneficial to the town and surrounding countryside.
Dee Savannah wins the year long garbage hauling contract after the City Council opened bids Monday night. His bid is 150 dollars per month for weekly residential pickups and daily business service, reflecting continued satisfactory work. Two other bids were submitted.
A writer curses the Illinois oil region after nine months of labor there. He laments harsh working conditions and mocks optimistic boosters, admitting three key mistakes and dismissing honest work in the Illinois oil fields as the lot of a fool.
Jal hosts Eunice Keglers in bowling matches with both women and men players. The event follows a previous visit that drew strong interest and a rematch is scheduled tonight and Friday at Hobbs.
Max Byers, a New Mexico Electric Service Company lineman, was treated for an insect bite after fainting while working on a new high line. He was moved from Jal to Eunice for emergency care as doctors cited heat stress and rapid systemic reaction, with the biting insect unidentified.
The Civic Club postpones Ladies Night to the following week due to the July Fourth holiday. The decision was approved at this week’s meeting and no meeting will be held next Tuesday night. A later father and son dinner will be discussed at the Ladies Night program.
