Registration of Voters Starts Today in Precincts A and B

Voter registration begins Thursday under the new state law. Each voter must register in person with the precinct committee. Precinct A registrars are Mrs. Ralph Baird and Mrs. L. V. Hadley. Precinct B registrars are Mrs. J. M. Whitworth and Mrs. Wayne Cheek. A permanent register with newcomers or those aging in requires new entries. spouses cannot register each other. Republican and Democrat will supervise in each precinct. Woolworth Hotel is likely the north precinct site and City Drug or Monterrey Hotel the south.

Former Jal Boy Dies After Fall

Jimmie Lee Smith formerly of Jal died this week in Fort Stockton from blood poisoning after a fall that broke his arm and led to infection.

Walter Page Suffering From Infected Tooth After Extraction

Walter Page fell ill this week due to an infected gum after a tooth was pulled. Doctors reported the infection spread into his bloodstream causing severe illness.

Fourth of July Rodeo Attendance Draws Jal Residents

A large crowd from Jal attended rodeos on the Fourth of July. Mr and Mrs Walter Pendleton and son traveled to Carlabad for the event and met George Smith Charles Post and his family Richard Goodner and other Jal residents. Mr and Mrs W R Perry went to Pecos for a rodeo joining Mr and Mrs Mont Beckham Mr and Mrs Pete Arpin and Mrs Helen Gray who participated in the women’s roping contest.

Scarecrow of Tomorrow Guards Wheat Field at New York Fair

Roscoe the trained crow perched on the arm of the Scarecrow of Tomorrow stands guard over a field at the New York World's Fair. The wheat near harvest will be ground into flour and baked into bread on the fairgrounds. The joke says the bread will cost about $10 a crumb but be worth 10 cents a loaf.

Healthers Here Today To Give Typhoid Shots

County health nurse Mrs. Adah Miller and Dr. Puckett will be at the school all day Thursday to provide free typhoid vaccines as part of the pre school checkup for children not yet protected.

Brininstool Rushed to Pecos Hospital for Appendicitis

Brininstool was rushed to a Pecos hospital last week where doctors operated for appendicitis. He is reported recovering well and awaiting discharge home soon.

Local rodeo notes and staffing changes report

Bill Eaton of Jal competed in the Carle bad Rodeo events and earned day money in multiple cowboy contests. Richard Merchant, from Eastern New Mexico and now in Arizona, posted a 16 second three day calf roping average. Buster Thompson, longtime at Frank's Place, now works at Strate way Bar. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Taylor left for Medina Valley to establish a new home this week.

Area oil activity boosts after week in Jar field

Six wells finished and nine rigs active as seven new locations were staked in the Jar area this week. New sites include Gulf No 2 Carr and Centl No 2 A-29 Jack with varied offsets. Completions report shows Anderson and Prichard and others yielding hundreds of barrels daily. Drilling underway at Addison No 4 Knight and more wells in progress. Continued on page 4.

Four Days Left For Jal Golf Club Qualifying

Jal Golf Club invites golfers to enter its first club tournament with four days left to submit qualifying rounds by July 10. Secretary J M Whitworth notes Roy Hays lead with an 87 as match play starts the week of July 10. Mr and Mrs M L Dooley returned from Mangum Oklahoma after a short weekend visit.

Move day at Lea County State Bank Jal Branch saw rapid business as customers shifted to the back of Our Drug Store for transactions. The event also celebrated Lieutenant Governor James M. Murray purchasing 81 more shares of the bank stock.

Bowling Club Is Enlarged and Reopens with Expanded Alleys

Mr and Mrs W O Keesee operators of the bowling alley in the Jal Variety Store building have remodeled their alleys since the first of the year and will reopen Thursday night or Friday with two full size ten pin alleys. One of the small five pin alleys will operate with the two larger as they invite patrons back to their larger quarters.

Cubs Postpone Meeting for Fourth Time

Cub Scout group postponed their weekly gathering to Friday at 9 A M due to a holiday. The session will include planning a hike and softball play. Mrs James Townsend left Wednesday for Shamrock to visit her mother and relatives with sister Mrs Newt Harris of Kermit.

Diet Of Dye Poisoning Baby Saved By Stomach Pump

Pat Hackman, one year old, was rushed to Community Hospital after ingesting dye from Kage. A stomach pump neutralized the toxin and he improved rapidly following treatment.

Tuesday Night Is Ladies Night at Jal Civic Club

A Jal civic club event titled Tuesday Night Is Ladies Night resumes after a break for Independence Day. A special program is planned and a large crowd is expected to attend. Billie Jones, daughter of Mr and Mrs J J Jones, broke her arm when she fell from a burro and was treated in Kermit hospital.

Publication Delayed by Independence Day Holiday

The Flare apologizes for a half day delay this week due to the July Fourth holiday. The disruption affected news gathering advertising and all operations. The paper promises the delay will not recur next year.
