An eight and a half pound son was born Friday night to Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Justis at a Kermit hospital. The mother and baby are doing well and will return home soon.
A revival will begin Sunday at the First Baptist Church, placards announced this week. Exterior improvements on the Clarence Roach J D McClintock home were commented to Dallas this week for a short visit. The house has had a complete renovation.
Local election registration ends Monday prompting voters to register at the county clerk in Lovington. Officials will be at the post office Saturday and Monday for late registrations in the final round. About 800 registered locally while county tallies show 2,000 countywide with 80 percent Democrats and 20 percent Republicans. Voters must select party preferences on their cards to vote in primaries.
J O Walton head of the Lea County juvenile committee announces the selection of John W Tramburg 32 probation officer in Washington DC to take over the newly created Lea County post. State welfare chief Miss Anna L Bosch traveled to Washington to interview Tramburg and the probate judge and recommended him highly. Several New Mexico applicants failed to meet federal and state requirements.
The popping of Jal’s big engine supplying electric power has stopped as the Skelly power plant began feeding motors and lights. Officials credit growth causing the outage, say the new system will handle future growth, with a few bugs remaining to be worked out but it’s already operating well.
Jal locals take regular lessons with Frank Hines of Wink as seventeen residents learn to fly. Several students reach soloing status while others practice daily for solo flights. Lea County offers abundant landing fields making flying popular and oilmen reportedly use planes to inspect wells near Jal.
Two locations balanced off two completions this week in the Jal area as nineteen wells remain active. The pace mirrors several weeks of steady drilling after a recent two week burst, with Anderson and Prichard No. 10 Wells listed at 330 from N and 1980 from.
Superintendent J. L. Burke returned from Las Cruces where he attended the sixth annual education conference and presided over the instruction improvement section. Dean Hugh M. Gardner served as general chairman at Hadley Hall Auditorium with speakers including Dr. Hester B. Curtis Miss Nina B. Lamkin and Senator Louise Coe from Glencoe.
Reports indicate Phillips exploring a modern casing head gasoline plant northeast of Jal on the Woolworth lease. A camp and water system would be built. a payroll of about 25 men would run operations and up to 100 workers would be needed for construction if approved.
George Addison and Virgil Carnahan tied for first in the Jal Golf Club first flight with an 80 par score as the Jal Flare Trophy tournament proceeds. The second flight winner remains undecided while Donald Justis is a default entrant moved from fifth to fourth flight. Homer Sapp meets J M Whitworth for third and fourth prizes as other flight members await results.
Jal shows a lively scene as about 150 cars gathered along the central street on a Saturday night. Merchants report strong business and advertisers echo the town’s upbeat mood despite the variability in signals of prosperity.
