Main Street Paving Project Advances in Jal

Paving work on Jal Main Street continues with a state appropriation for a twenty two foot center strip. The project connects to a two mile long paving segment to El Paso Camp in Greater Jal. Base caliche has been laid and topping will start after packing.

Father Son Banquet Set For Jal July 28

The Jal Civic Club will host a Father and Son banquet on the night of July 28 at the Methodist Church banquet hall. All Jal men are invited and a committee will call on all they can find to make personal invitations. Those without their own boys should bring a borrowed son. A summer recreation program for boys will be developed by attendees.

Voters Registered in Jal Regions Ahead of Civil War Forecast

Officials reported over 700 residents signed up in Jal with 325 in the south and 400 in the north as the second week of registration closed. Early county results indicated an 8-1 Democratic majority.

McClintock Home Undergoes Major Improvements

The home of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McClintock was substantially improved with stucco work and a new concrete porch completed this week. Ted Harbison hosted two Melrose brothers visiting him during the week.

Kermit Amatuer Softball Nears Halfway Mark

Kermit Amateur Softball league standings show Jal and Stanolind Magnolia Production tied at .714 for the first half. Jal also leads the second half through five games with Finley Auto Supply. Jimmie Lewallen of Jal fired two no hit games with a 13 strikeouts in six innings. Barnes Pharmacy’s Holder scored 12 runs, Echols of Magnolia Production is second with 11 and Echols leads in hitting with Leese second.

Crowe Recovers From Engine Cut at NM Electric Plant

A. B. Crowe, employee of New Mexico Electric Service Co., suffered a deep forearm gash and a minor fracture when a governor flew off an engine at the company plant. He was treated at the Community hospital, moved to Hobbs for further checks, and released Wednesday.

Pipeline Muddles Golf Tourney Delayed by Job Assignments

Employment of several qualifiers in the Jal Golf Club tournament on an out of town pipeline job has delayed several matches this week. An eleven inch loving cup, the Jal Flare trophy, has been ordered and will be presented to the winner of the championship flight.

Angelo Doctor To Move Here

Dr. Boyd Nibling of San Angelo announces plans to locate and set up a medical practice in Jal this week. He trained at the University of Texas and Galveston Medical School and interned at Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio. He is brother in law to Miss Mickie Wilson, an operator at Cabanola Beauty Shop for two months.

Lady's First When Twins Make Debut

Layne Ross Turner and Rana Gail Turner were born minutes apart in a Kermit hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Layne Turner of the El Paso Camp. Rana Gail arrived at 7:00 a.m. and Layne at 8:15 a.m. landing a five pound three ounce boy and four pound fourteen ounce girl.

Six Locations Reported In Area Week

Six oil and gas drills were active in the Jal area with nine teen rigs total after three completions. Wells listed include Gulf No. 2 Carr, Culberson and Irwin No. 1 Martin, Anderson and Prichard wells, and others in sections 10 to 37east. Spudding and drilling progress, with several deep drillings noted and multiple pending completions.

Power Change Planned In Jal With New NM Electric Line

The New Mexico Electric Company plans a week or two switch over as lines are strung from Skelly Camp to Jal. The old power plant will close and Johnnie Connell, the manager, will move his house near the office and add a room. The change follows higher load at the old plant.

Owens captures two first places and a second in three calf roping events at the Jal Calf Roping Club. Times include 17.4 16.8 17.6 seconds. Arthur Toby posts 16.2 to claim best time of the day. Harve Blaik earns two thirds with 24 and 25 seconds. Kyle Sanders fills Woodrow Bailey’s Jal Bank post for two weeks while Bailey vacations and plans stargazing at McDonald Observatory.
