C C Tucker of Ysleta with Lea County Gas Company announced improvements to Jal gas lines. Work will start Friday to bury lines near the surface and lay 3 000 feet of new piping. R L Petty, manager, said work should begin by Friday.
Fire Chief Brooks Brienstool reports the department received 1000 feet of 2 1/2 inch hose as part of new engine equipment. The department expects a truck by the middle of the month and continues planning, though full details remain on page four.
Virgil Carnahan moved a step closer to the Jal Flares trophy after defeating George Addison in a playoff for first flight honors. He now faces the second flight winner in a title match likely to be played this weekend.
The Jal Postoffice has a new fall coat with fresh exterior paint and a cement sidewalk. Interior white with green trim mirrors the outside darker green and silver. Nearby the Bender hotel and adjacent office space also received a fresh paint job.
A protest meeting over the recent stamp tax on legal instruments is set for 2 p m Saturday at the Courthouse in Lovington. Organizers T A Whelen and Luke Roberts invite residents to form a taxpayers association to oppose the tax. Also notes O L Laird Mrs O L Laird and Juanita Ely spent last weekend in Big Spring and Water Valley.
A new city well, drilled by Randy Johnston, reached 584 feet to the third water pay and showed a 60 gallons per minute yield on a 24 hour test. At 35 gallons per minute city use, it would cover needs with surplus for emergencies, producing about 86 400 gallons daily. Regular pump equipment will be installed for a thorough test before shutting down other shallow wells. City officials praised the promising water supply.
Mrs Shaw wife of Jal port of entry patrolman and one of Jal's newest brides was improving in Hobbs after an automobile accident north of here Monday night. The car overturned four times while being taken to Hobbs for sinus treatment. her brothers and husband accompanied her. She suffered severe shock and bruises. one brother received gashes on leg and head.
A new registration law requires any person or firm doing building work not for wages to register with the state. Temporary permit applications are due in Santa Fe by August 4. State registrar Allen Stamm will visit Hobbs on August 16 to explain the law to Sea County contractors. Betty Lou and Hal Betty returned from visiting relatives in Lubbock and Amarillo.
JIM Lewallen of the Jal Stanolind team struck out nineteen of twenty-one Magnolia Production batters in Kermit to clinch the first half league title. Jal won game one 8-7, and Lewallen’s no hit performance secured the playoff place. finals to be nine innings starting 8:15 p.m. Texas time with Finley Auto Supply as next opponent.
Jal area logs 21 drilling wells this week up from 19. Locations include Anderson and Prichard Nos. 10 and 1B 32 St with depths of 495 and 3432 feet, Amerada Johnson No. 3 at 2475 feet, and Centl Jack projects at 3475 and 660 feet. Continued drilling noted at Centl No. 6 and Culberson Irwin No. 1 Car.
Mrs. J. L. Cooper suffered a painful sewing incident when a needle pierced her finger twice breaking off, requiring a doctor to remove it. She is reported doing fine. Rev. C. Y. Butler left for a ten day vacation to Eastland for a family reunion and fishing time.
A provisional Rotary Club was organized Tuesday with seventeen charter members. J. L. Burke was elected president and George E. Davis among directors. District Governor Claude Simpson of Roswell attended, noting noon meetings at the Methodist Church and sixty membership classifications.
The First Baptist Church of Jal began a revival Sunday with Rev. T. L. Kilpatrick of Iowa Park, Texas, as evangelist. Evening services start at 8 p m with a 7 30 p m prayer meeting. morning services at 10 a m through Friday. Rev. Norris and Kilpatrick invite all to attend.
Eunice bowling team defeated Jal 400 pins Wednesday night in Eunice. Jal Keglers plan to visit Thursday to even the score. Participants from Eunice included Jimmie Morgan Buster Thomp son Eddie Hall and Raymond Stone.
Word reached as the Flare went to press of the death of H. B. Lovett, 79, of Arizona. He was the father of Mrs. Baird of Oshea and was well known here. Funeral services were held in Duncan, Arizona, Wednesday.
