Fire department organization approved at Tuesday meeting. Jimmy Morrison named fire chief and will recruit volunteers from interested residents to form an efficient unit. Weekly practice sessions planned under city ordinance to train members in effective firefighting methods.
Prizes in the New Mexico Electric Service Company's residential and Jal Civic Club business lighting contests were awarded this week. Mrs. J. M. Whitworth won first prize a floor lamp. Mrs. B. A. Rea received an electric coffee maker. the Woolworth Hotel claimed the business award a waffle iron. Eight residential entries were received and an advisory public utilities committee was formed by Mayor McAllister with J. M. Whitworth M. I. Humphries and Geo. E. Davis named. A one reel trib ute to the American Legion will be shown at Rex theatre January 11 and 12 alongside the feature film.
Elmer Turner Jal deputy sheriff and Horace Owens were sworn in at Lovington. Owens obtained a writ of mandamus from District Judge James B. McGee and was installed as High Sheriff as sheriff W Kerley surrendered jail keys and related papers. Kerley vowed to pursue further legal action. Governor John E Miles inaugurated at Santa Fe and began state appointments.
City occupation taxes must be paid by January 31 to avoid penalties. City Clerk Woodrow Bailey warns that a 10 percent penalty applies from February 1 and 20 percent afterward, with fines for late payment.
W. H. Taylor was hurt in George Hazeltine's Welding Shop when an acetylene torch ignited contents of a carbide can. Dr. D. H. Roberts said he was progressing as well as expected. A bolt pierced his leg and a large hole was blown in his head. The blast occurred after someone brought the carbide can to have a handle welded on. Unaware of the can’s explosive contents, Taylor started the job triggering the explosion.
Jal Civic Club members met at the Methodist Church to decide on continuing the Jal Flare serving Jal, Stuart and Emma Jackson Long attended the meeting and the first issue under new management would be issued Thursday. Rev. L L Butler announced Christmas lighting prize awards and plans for a Boy Scout hut were discussed with future meetings set for Tuesday at 7 pm.
R L Robinson, longtime Jal resident, repurchases Jal Food Store from Calley and Dunn and will rename it Robinson Grocery and Market. He previously operated the store before selling it a year ago. He says he is glad to be back at the old stand and invites friends to visit. Jury service was noted for local men Malcolm Madera M I Humphreys Fowler Hir J V Cowan and Jim Sousares. Mr and Mrs Earnest Beubler spent the weekend in Hobbs.
Mayor McAllister appointed a city dance committee to plan benefit dances at City Hall. Members include Gus Kendrick of El Paso Camp, Helen Childers, and John Connell. A firemen's ball is likely first, followed by a Président's Birthday dance on January 30 to raise funds for the volunteer fire department equipment.
Fort Worth Star Telegram notes 118 pound boxer Ted Shaikewitz may enter the Golden Gloves district tournament in Big Spring with a local amateur team. Winners advance to Fort Worth then to the national event in San Francisco. Ted also eyed the New Mexico Gloves at Hobbs.
A city council on Tuesday night set a fine of 50 dollars and a six month jail term or both for tampering with water meters. Officials warned the ordinance aims to protect property and enforce compliance.
Jal City Council awarded a 19900 contract to Vedders Construction Company of Childress Texas after purchasing the Jal Waterworks for 7500. The project includes a storage tank and six inch mains with fire plugs. The city took over operation after bond proceeds funded the purchase and issued new deposits and rates for residents and businesses. Bids for a 20 by 20 foot city water office building were sought with opening Friday.
Brininstool resigns from the city council and is appointed city water superintendent in charge of the water system construction and office operations. Madera, former county commissioner, is named to fill the vacancy, term expiring in April 1940.
