Waterworks Nearing Completion In City

Water system near completion after minor repairs and inspections. City water superintendent Brooks Brininstool said tests on wells and pumps occupy the week and the mains will be tied into the new system within five days. One leak found and repaired. acceptance hinges on tower pressure tests.

Lacy Turner To be Guest At Grid Dinner

The Wink High School football banquet will be at the Methodist Church Saturday night. Lacy Turner will be the principal speaker and is famed across Texas New Mexico and Oklahoma for the Wink Wildcats. Tom O Donadl will be toastmaster with Mayor McAllister speaking on football spirit.

Burke Con fers On School Budget

Superintendent J L Burke Jr traveled to Santa Fe to confer with the state educational budget officer on next year’s school budget. All state superintendents were summoned to present budgets. New Lea County telephone directory copies arrived in Jal with listing pages showing C E Selly from El Paso and C L Perkins from El Paso Camp.

Firemen to Get Commission on Decorations

Fire Chief Jimmie Morrison announced that Firemen will receive a percentage of receipts from a decorating firm bringing hunting and welcome posters for the Waterworks Celebration on March 8. Merchants who decorate stores will be protected against fire.

Scouts to Enter First Aid Meet in Hobbs

A district Boy Scout first aid contest will be held in Hobbs on Saturday at the South Hobbs auditorium at 1 30 p m for Lea County boys. The first elimination step selects nine teams to compete in Dallas on April 15 for the region 9 championship. First and second place teams advance to an eastern New Mexico area council contest in Roswell on March 11, with one team advancing to the Amarillo sectional on March 25.

Churches in Jal Announce Needs of Two Families

A Sunday church announcement in Jal highlighted the needy condition of two local families. Mrs. Walter Pendleton chairs a donations committee collecting clothes and food for the families whose main earners are hospitalized for mental care.

City Pound Starts Work On Strays

The city pound opens with an enclosure for stray livestock. Poundmaster M M Seaton begins duties as Mayor H H McAllister announces stray stock will be impounded and a fee charged for release. The move supports the city improvement program by keeping strays from yards after water system completion. An ordinance establishing the fee was passed following owner complaints.

Hummel Band to Play at Fireman's Benefit Dance

Ray Hummel and his orchestra will perform at the Fireman's benefit dance in the High School gym on March 8 with a string orchestra providing old-time dancing at city hall. Tickets sold before the dance and at gates, one ticket grants admission to either event. Music starts at 9 PM and runs until 1 AM after a ranch barbeque.

Band Uniforms Ordered For School March Arrival

The band secured navy blue uniforms with royal blue and gold trim and navy caps with tall gold plumes, funded after a lengthy fundraising effort by band mothers and the school. Floyd Haley lost his car to a fire while en route to the El Paso Camp. the 1936 Chevrolet could not be saved. Fowler Hair traveled to Alamogordo on business last week.

Jal To Host March 8 Waterworks Celebration

Jal Civic Club outlines plan to welcome New Mexico and West Texas on March 8 with Texas Tech Band, waterworks dedication, a system tour, fire fighting demo, barbecue, and a city hall music dance. Cattle for barbecue supplied by Pendleton and Baird. Acme Lumber provides tables. public address system planned. officials invited. possible radio broadcast network.

Meyers Plans Good Will Tour For Waterworks

A goodwill tour to kick off the waterworks celebration will run Thursday March 3 and Friday March 4. R L Meyers will lead the Jal area outreach with the Jal High School band. participants meet in downtown Jal at 9 am. The tour visits Eunice Monument Hobbs Lovington Tatum Kermit Wink Monahans Pecos Pyote Barstow with street signs and placards to draw crowds.

Jal Student in DAR Contest Selected to Represent State

June Rose Owen, one of several Jal high school girls, earned a chance to visit Washington, D. C., if the governor selects her by chance. Her name was sent to Mrs. W. G. Donley, state chairman of the D A R good citizenship committee at Hobbs. The Harmon couple traveled to Greenville after news of Marmon’s death, with burial held Sunday and return Tuesday.

Health Inspector to Visit Jal Over Health Certificates

Health officials warn Jal food establishments to comply with health certificate laws and send employees for examinations. The state health inspector is expected to visit Jal soon to enforce six monthly reissues and correct laxity in enforcement.

Rifle Club Opens Membership Soon Under NRA Rules

Jal Rifle Club plans a formal organization under the National Rifle Association rules with Randy Johnston reporting this week. Ten members must join before a charter is issued, with signup through Mr. Johnston or L. J. Calley.
