A one location south extension in the Mattix area of Lea County was registered Tuesday at the Sam Weiner No. 38 Smith. The well flowed 17 barrels per hour while cleaning out after shot and reached total depth of 3,506 feet, where it was shot with 120 quarts. Operators plan a southward move for No. 4 Smith with tests planned on both west and east.
Lea County led the state with 32,926,788 barrels produced in 1938, excluding the Mallamar field, according to the State Oil Conservation Commission. Totals from Artesia to Vacuum include Eddy County at 2,225,411 barrels and a statewide tally of 35,510,276 barrels.
M. M. Rogers was re elected with out opposition as member of the Board of Directors of the school District No 19 last week. A light vote was cast though only one vote was needed to re elect Mr Rogers. Mr and Mrs Elton Weaver and children and Mr and Mrs Adell Galle and son were in Hobbs on business Tuesday of last week.
A large drip near the El Paso gas plant exploded as warm weather caused gas to expand. The burst sent steel pieces flying across the countryside, scattering debris for hundreds of feet. No injuries were reported as no one was nearby.
A high school band will perform Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the school gym with the Odessa brass sextet as guests. The program includes concert and popular pieces with solos by Elton Blackwell Teddy Sousares and Charles Post. Proceeds go to the band uniform fund.
Civic Club urges designation of a city dump. They favor an abandoned caliche pit on the Kermit highway two miles south of town as an ideal site. Dumping worsens range country and would incur fines if dumped elsewhere.
Three inmates provoked shouting and panic in a city jail area Monday night by yelling fire. The high gas heat caused swelling steam and motion as guards found the valve outside the jail and cooled the situation by lowering the gas.
The House of David defeated the El Paso Natural Gassers in a Saturday game that drew over 200 spectators. Proceeds benefited school libraries, with the high and grade school libraries clearing 35 dollars.
Sonnie Harris six year old son of Mrs F A Harris endures a rough week with two hospital visits. A neighbor threw a rock injuring his head requiring two stitches and a fall from a building or structure left him unconscious for a day. His mother in law or relative Mrs F H Goodner is recovering from illness and receiving treatment.
The waterworks celebration was scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, with the Texas Tech Matador band in the parade. Bands from West Texas and New Mexico will participate. Six engraved trophies will be awarded, per Civic Club trophy chair J. F. Sousares. D. O. Wiley may judge the contests. A goodwill tour precedes the event, inviting residents to a barbecue and celebration. Scoutmaster John Connell assigns Boy Scouts to prepare the barbecue site by City Hall. Fire officials seek an orchestra for the dance.
A Thursday night windstorm in Jal blew off several roofs and toppled garbage cans. A roof from a neighboring house hit the Hadley home, shattering windows and snapping power lines, forcing a league party to move to a safer location.
Water Superintendent Brooks Brininstool announced this week that the city will set water meters at residences and business houses. Residents who have not installed 50 are urged to deposit at the city water office. Tests of the new water tower were satisfactory and construction on the water system should be completed late this week.
Lea County and Jal will be the subjects of a radio broadcast over KOB at Albuquerque Saturday at 7 30 p m. Lieutenant Governor James M Murray and County Agent W E Flint will take part in the broadcast as part of a State sponsored series describing the counties of New Mexico.
Mrs. A. C. Pinson Sr. of Dexter is dangerously ill and may undergo major surgery. Her son A. C. Pinson Jr. and daughter in law plan to leave Jal Bood to care for her and plan to sell their home. Mrs. Pinson is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. C. Y. Butler.
The Eastern New Mexico area of the Boy Scout Council received the Acorn award for memberships during 1938 with 909 new Scouts and Cubs enrolled. Scoutmaster John Connell reports about 1,700 boys now in the area, the council's largest total. The council previously won the Acorn in 1933 1937 and 1938. The local troop formed a year ago now has 45 members with eight at the first meeting.
City councilmen and the mayor urged payment of occupation taxes overdue with a ten percent penalty already added. If not paid soon, an extra five dollar fine will be imposed. Sixteen firms have not paid their occupation tax at the present.
