Election of Trustees Held at High School Gym

A school board election was held Tuesday February 4 in the high school gymnasium. Three candidates were Bill Owen Bill Lindsey and Morris Mitchell. Morris Mitchell was elected replacing Homer Pender who did not seek reelection. The board now includes Roger Van Bramer D C Buffington and Morris Mitchell.

Senior Class Chooses Play For Final Rehearsals

The senior class selects Song Of My Heart by Austin Goetz for their senior play under sponsor Mrs. E J Marshall who will direct. She notes the script is advanced for a high school group but believes the class can pull it off well with proper performance and setting props. Some students boast they may stage the greatest high school play if lines are learned.

Jal Postoffice opens two clerk positions in 1947 exam

The Jal New Mexico Post Office will fill two civil service positions through standard procedures. Open to war service veterans and the public, starting pay 1.04 dollars per hour for substitutes and 2100 dollars per year for regular employees. Choral Club Sees Growth and Clinic Invitation

The choral department led by Mrs Recer reports a near doubling to 55 pupils with growing interest. On April 19 a clinic is planned with about 500 voices, inviting every county school. Earlier, February 18 the Eunice choral club of 75 members sang for Jal students.

Eastern Star Initiation At Regular Meeting

Mrs Opal Armstrong was initiated by the Eastern Stars at 7 00 p m Tuesday Feb 11. It marked the first initiation led by this year s officers. Mrs Dora Hart and Mrs Ora Chambers formerly Jal now Odessa attended. Refreshments of sandwiches chips and coffee were served.

Pep Rally Boosts Spirit Before Three-Game Tour

A Thursday pep rally at the high school kicked off a three game tour for the lone basketball team with games set against Artesia Haggerman and Dexter. Cheerleaders led yells as students filled the front of the building and entered afterward chanting Your Pep.

New science equipment arrives for school department

Mr Rejna received on January 30 an order of science room items including preserved specimens for dissection such as hydra planaria and starfish, plus four dozen beakers, 15 boiling flasks, bell jar covers, a telegraph relay and an oil stone. Mr Requa expects soon to have one of the best equipped science departments in the state.

Mr. John Wilson of Star Engraving Co. visited Jal High School on Wednesday February 5 to present graduation announcements. Seniors used elimination to pick a design featuring the school mascot, the panther, and Wilson collected junior ring orders during the visit.

The high school seniors gave Mr. K. B. Walker a milk shake on Monday February 10 to thank him for canceling a first period English test. He joked about a possible partnership with Mrs. Marshall if such favors continued.

Rival Ranch Drives Raise 461 For Boy Scouts

Two ranch groups in Jal competed to raise 461 dollars for the Eastern New Mexico Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America on February 14. Jean Hearne led B Square Ranch under Ranch Boss Mrs. Tommie Knight, while Bar Nothing Ranch ran under Bosses Dave Foreman and Butch Boyd. The B Square team collected more, and Mrs. Knight earned the grand prize of a Boy Scout hatchet.

Trees Set Out for El Paso Natural Gas Camps

El Paso Natural Gas Co. recently purchased 400 trees for Camp No. 2 and Camp No. 3. N. J. Hadley hauled the trees from Brownfield Nursery in Brownfield, Texas. Roger Vanbramer did the landscaping and supervised the tree placement.

Eunice Cardinals defeated Jal Panthers 44 to 22 in the county championship final after beating Monument Indians and Tatum Coyotes in earlier rounds. Two-way Radio Speeds Construction for El Paso Gas

The El Paso Natural Gas Company uses a two-way short-wave radio system with 50 watt fixed and 80 watt mobile units to hasten construction of its feeder and 26 inch California pipeline. FCC assigned 39.54 megacycles for 30 mile coverage with fixed Jal station and mobile links to Odessa Pyote Carlsbad Eunice Hobbs and beyond. Supervisors Lon Wainman and Larry Duthie oversee Jal site with T. E. Fay advising on equipment questions.
