The Jal Rotary club luncheon featured Coach Joe Smith and Coach O Donnell discussing the Panthers State Championship season. They credited training, character, and teamwork with success, noting strong school and town support, while also endorsing a plan to route a U S Highway through Jal.
The Band Mothers plan a Friday night dance at City Hall to replenish their depleted treasury. Local talent will form the orchestra and Christmas decorations will adorn the hall. Tickets go on sale Thursday and Friday with band students selling them.
With 400 pledged and 200 more tentatively pledged after January 1 Jal's Youth Activity Campaign nears its 600 dollar goal. Volunteers signed up pledge collectors for Boy Scout and playground work during the year. J M Whitworth led the collection committee.
The Jal football team and local citizens plan a banquet in Hobbs at the Hardin Hotel next Thursday to honor the Jal Jal team as state champions of New Mexico. About 65 persons are invited and the team will be introduced on stage by the mayor and lieutenant governor followed by a theatre party.
Orvill Chance Elvin and Bill Jackson are wanted in Arizona on 11 charges including burglary and forgery. Chance recently received a two to three year suspended sentence in Crane District Court for steering oilfield equipment. They face burglary of an Army store eight car break ins and two forged checks.
Foreman Bill Danner of the Woolworth ranch posted a $500 bond after a wreck near Jal in which his car collided with a T-P truck. The case is set for this term of court. Mrs Ralph Baird hosts the Jal Bridge Club Wednesday night. Dr and Mrs Boyd Nobling, Miss Mickey Wilson and Lou Catshall visited Mr and Mrs John Rogers in Hobbs Monday.
Jal Panthers defeated Silver City 14 to 6 at Artesia to claim the New Mexico title and challenge the Texas champ. Eight Texas teams enter four regional games this week with Waco and Woodrow Wilson favored to advance. gate results from the Gateway Bowl spur the bid.
Clyde Bouldin, former Jal driller, received a four to six year term in Roswell for involuntary manslaughter in a fatal Eunice incident. The case moved from Lea County District Court to Roswell for trial after the venue change.
Rev Lodwick Myers of Electra, formerly of Jal, has died in Electra. He worked in the Church of God last year and remained there until his move to Electra.
Anderson and Pritchard, a busy local operator, opened a new house in the north part of town this week for an executive. The new building sits beside the company’s recently constructed house. Mr and Mrs Frank Knight received their Buick coupe, ordered earlier, on Saturday.
Willis Brown formerly at the port of entry near Roswell received a two to three year term on a charge of forgery. He is also wanted in Douglas Arizona on the same charge. He used a port badge to cash worthless checks and traveled through Arizona and New Mexico before being jailed in Hobbs after a bond incident.
District Court in Lovington closed after a three day session of no jury cases. A. E. Henry of Jal, 17, remains jailed on burglary charges for the November 2 break-in at George Davis' service station and a November 24 Del-Tex truck theft. Rupert and Mrs Madera returned Sunday after being away.
The Speakers Club at Community Church held its fourth meeting with George Davis as toastmaster. J Fletcher spoke on How to Make Friends and Stay Married, Margaret Henry on Postal Regulations, Dean Murry on A New Way To Find A Job, and J D McClintock gave a professional talk on pharmacy. Visitors attended and were invited to join. next meeting set for January 4 with Dr Boyd Nibling master of ceremonies.
Parc Panthers open basketball season with Artesia on Saturday at 7 30 p m. Jal will start for Parc and A Banta has been ill.
