Opinion column notes Jal needs a city health doctor, praises Dr R E Bennett and calls for immediate action. Social and sports banter follow about football season, weather, and local rumors including a potential Jal credit association and critiques of sensational weeklies.
A regular Speakers Club gathering is set for Friday at 7 30 p m at the Methodist Church toastmaster will be Robert Madera. Plans to hold future meetings in different buildings and homes around the city are discussed by secretary Mrs Clarence Roach George Davis and John Benton will speak with impromptu remarks by members all interested invited. Mrs O H Harris traveled to Artesia Monday and returned with her mother.
Jal residents may enroll in a CAA flying school for 10 dollars if over 25 with 72 hours of ground instruction from 7 to 9 PM on Monday Wednesday and Friday. Those under 25 can pay a 6 dollar physical examination and may qualify for government free flying instruction. Contact J D McClintock John Connell or H F Steen at the El Paso Gas plant for details.
While pulling a set of elevators with catlines a line swung over and struck H. C. Dupree in the left temple, knocking him unconscious and causing a deep cut. He received first aid at Jal hospital with several stitches and significant blood loss.
A community sing will be held Sunday at 2 30 p m at the Methodist Church with new hymn books to be used. Quartets from Hobbs Jal and Kermit are expected to attend the event as part of the musical program.
A. M. Shipman of the Ajax Drilling Company was injured while scaling pipe when a scale chip pierced the posterior chamber of his right eye. He received treatment at the Jal hospital and was later sent to an eye specialist.
Mrs. Ralph Baird made a business and pleasure trip to Lovington on Wednesday. Mrs. Emilou Betty returned to Jal this week after a two week vacation at Ruidoso.
Approximately one and a quarter inches of rain fell in Jal from Sunday night to Tuesday morning. Farmers say the gentle soaking helps fodder crops and alfalfa, aiding truck gardens and boosting prospects for a good crop season in the area.
Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster John Eddy tour New Mexico visiting Carlsbad Caverns and other sights. Junior Hadley shook hands with the state governor. A misposted letter to Jal was saved by a passerby. They plan to return later this week via the Alamogordo White Sands region. Louie Pender spent the weekend in Midland.
Dr. R E Bennett, new Jal physician, opens a weekly free eye ear nose and throat clinic at Community Hospital today Tuesday and Friday mornings. He will run general practice and osteopathic work with Dr D I Roberts and joins Donavan and Geis Clinic affiliations. Bennett trained at Kirkville College of Osteopathy and surgery and Detroit and Denver hospitals, and is a native of Youngstown Ohio.
Gerald Roach departed Thursday for a week long vacation at his grandmother Mrs. G B Tumlingon's home in Texas.
The Jal Panthers announce six home games and three away contests this season. Away games occur at Wink Seagraves and Carlsbad while home games host Monument Tatum Artesia Hageman Hobbs Lay ington. The team seeks a repeat state title with tough league tests.
Thirty eight Rotary members with wives and guests attended the monthly Ladies Night at the Methodist Church. Songs opened and closed the supper. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Roach Burl Howell and Bill Howard of El Paso. Howard showed colored talking motion pictures tracing the natural gas line from Jal to El Paso then Phoenix for domestic and commercial use.
Miss Frances Butler is visiting friends in Midland this week, stopping at local homes and enjoying time with acquaintances during her stay in the city.
Mrs Frank Knight welcomes out of town guests this week as residents shop and visit. The neighborhood notes show a busy household ready to trade and complete tasks efficiently in town.
