City approves 20 percent electric rate cut for commercial use
At a July 31 special meeting the Jal City Council unanimously accepted a 20 per cent reduction in commercial electric rates. J F Maddox of the New Mexico Electric Company spoke for the firm. The council then passed Ordinance No XXVII as written and had it sealed, authorizing the decrease. Maddox also discussed more street lights on Main Street from Rex Theatre to the water works tower, eight new lights replacing old lamps. Installation will start soon. Barney Bailey was named water department clerk after Francis Shaw’s resignation.

Speakers Club Lawn Party Hosts 36 At NM Electric Service
Thirty six people attended a Friday night lawn party on the floodlit lawn of the New Mexico Electric Service Company. After a buffet of fried chicken potato salad beans cake and ice cream games followed with prizes awarded to Mrs. Dean Murray and Burl Howell for a fast unpack and repack clothes challenge. The event was sponsored by the losing Blues side in a ten week membership drive and attendance contest. The next meeting is set for August 16.

Jal Country Club purchases a 24 by 70 foot building to serve as a new clubhouse. The facility will have a 24 by 40 foot entertainment hall for teas and balls, two locker rooms with showers, a caddy and concession area, a long porch, and seating for members. City Council Sets Clean-Up Week and Penalties
Jal officials proclaim August 24 to 31 as Clean-Up Week urging removal of trash and fire hazards. If rubbish remains around businesses, the city will clean up and bill the property owner.
