A Jal city special council meeting is set for 7 30 this evening to hire a water department clerk replacing Mrs Francis Shaw who recently resigned. The agenda includes talks with New Mexico Electric Company about street lights and possible electric rate reductions for the city. Mayor A H Adams notes no new state budget approval information yet despite an audit by J D Hannah assistant to the state comptroller. The regular meeting next week will cover routine city business.

Jim Murray Likely To Enter New Mexico Governor Race

Lt Governor James Murray said he is inclined to run for governor after petitions from friends prompted consideration. Petitions circulated in 28 of 30 counties support his candidacy. Murray has led Lea County Democratic politics and remains a prominent figure in regional circles.

Officers of the Rotary International Club hold a district assembly in Almogordo Tuesday and Wednesday with Jal attendees Hugh Steen John Connell I L Burke and others. Courtney Couple Welcomes Eight Pound Baby Donnie Paul

A son weighing eight pounds was born last Saturday to Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Courtney. The happy infant is named Donnie Paul and both mother and child are reported in fine health. Local visitors and travel details follow in brief notices.

Dog License Law Enforced by Jat Mayor

Community Sing at First Baptist Church

A community sing is planned at the First Baptist Church Sunday at 2 30 p m with Lee Robinson as leader. Quartets from Hobbs and Kermit will join the event. New hymnals have been ordered and will arrive Saturday. advertising has been sold and books will be ready for use.

Rotary Talk On Juvenile Delinquency Head

County Juvenile Delinquency head Robert Feldhammer spoke to the Rotary Club about welfare work juvenile correction and delinquency. Hobbs guests included Jack Maddox John ODonnell and Jack Camp with Bill Smith of Jal attending. J L Burke led the program.

Golfers Return to Course After Summer Cleanup

Twenty golfers joined a Jal Country Club cleanup last Saturday. Mesquite near the fairways was burned and repairs made to improve the course. The course is now in fine shape and future tournament plans with other clubs are being contemplated. J. M. Whitworth, secretary, said refreshments from Acme Lumber Company were served after match play and individual contests.

Mr. and Mrs Olen Elliott came back to Jal after several weeks of vacationing in California. Mr. and Mrs Bud Cunningham of the Humble Camp also returned home from their vacation this week.

New Football Coach To Be Chosen By Jal Board

Jal School Board meets tonight at 7 30 to select a new football coach from three applicants. Superintendent J L Burke notes seven states are represented in the field Arkansas Kansas Oklahoma Colorado Arizona Texas and New Mexico. The board will also set the upcoming school year dates vacations and holidays with official announcements next week.

Scouts To Tour Famed Regions Of New Mexico

Four Boy Scouts led by Scoutmaster John M. Eddy will embark on a 150 mile auto tour of New Mexico. They will visit Taos and Santa Fe cliff dwellings pueblos Indian villages and pottery and silversmith shops. A three day stop in Gallup for Indian dances precedes Alamogordo return.

Speakers Club Outdoor Lawn Party Tonight

The Speakers Club plans an outdoor lawn party for 7 30 p m at the New Mexico Electric Service Company grounds. Sponsored by the losing Blues team, the event honors a drive for new members conducted over the past two months. The losers will provide entertainment, arrange logistics, and supply food. Admission is fifty cents per person.
