Jal Takes Third In District Track Meet

Jal placed third in the district track meet at Roswell over Friday and Saturday. Bill Zahn won first in shot put and both hurdles, breaking records. Ward Mosley qualified for state in the 220, Carl Murray ran the mile in 4 5.8, and Pinky Evans set a state 22.2 record. In tennis Jal finished third in boys singles and second in girls doubles.

All Teachers Reelected In Jal School Board Vote

A blanket re-election of all Jal school teachers was approved this week by the school board. The only staff member not returning is Mrs. K B Walker who resigned upon marrying the high school principal.

Son Born to Mr and Mrs Harbie Harrisons

Congratulations greet the Harbie Harrisons on the birth of a son this week. The baby weighs seven pounds six ounces and joins the family with joy.

Girl Scout Meet Set For Tonight

Meeting for all interested in Girl Scouting at 7 30 p m Thursday in the Methodist Church. A troop will be organized after the meeting and a women’s committee will be chosen to guide the work. Women and girls as well as men are urged to attend.

Brininstool Elected Civic Club President for Three Months

Brooks Brininstool already serves as fire chief water and parks superintendent and was elected president of the Jal Civic Club for three months. Ralph Baird became treasurer Irving Faverman secretary and H H McAllister was re elected vice president. The meeting covered finances and an upcoming Game and Fish Association organization meeting. An error mis-announced this week's meeting as ladies night. ladies will be guests next Tuesday.

Band Selected For Radio Spot After Clovis Clinic

High School band returned from Clovis Band Clinic without prizes as none offered. They played well and the choral club sang. The group broadcast on the radio station after being selected from twelve bands to perform.

Chevrolet Dealers Open Used Car Lot in Lovington

Stodghill McAdoo Chevrolet Company of Lovington and Wink will open a used car lot on Main Street between Shorty’s Grocery and Market and McKeown’s Variety Store. C Ray Wells, already selling cars locally with S and M, joins the firm which will handle Chevrolet Pontiac Oldsmobile and Buick.

Miss Chittwood Attends Uncle Funeral in Mertzon

Miss Marguerite Henry and Miss Nyta Ree Chittwood traveled to San Angelo over the weekend. Chittwood attended the funeral of her uncle N J Dawgon in Mertzon on Saturday. She then returned to San Angelo and later went to Jal. Mrs Lee Smith and daughter Janice Marguerite are visiting relatives in Lubbock this week.

Game and Fish Body Set For Work

The Permian Basin Game and Fish Protective Association forms a chapter with Civic Club endorsement. L. J. Calley and Hunter Hughes named directors and plan a meeting at 7 15 p m at the Methodist Church to organize and recruit local sportsmen. A Wink chapter outlines cooperation with New Mexico and Texas game bodies and aims to promote Red Bluff Lake as a Southwest recreation center.

Meyers Named to Tech Band Faculty

R. L. Meyers director of the Jal Band has been chosen from New Mexico high school band directors to join the Texas Tech Band school faculty this summer. He will teach theory and will travel with Mrs. Meyers to Lubbock for the June 5 opening.

Navy trade school hopeful earns elite test pass

Charles J. Justis of Jaw passed the U S Navy trade school tests, one of five of 75 to succeed. Six passed prelims and finals with one failure. He will join group schools and be in Norfolk for six to eight months, then ten months at sea before potential Third Class petty officer rank.

Fort Worth Visit by Yoakums and Friends

Mrs. J. C. Yoakum and Mrs. W. I. Yoakum are visiting Fort Worth this week. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. Stein and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Davis left Saturday for El Paso. The ladies visited friends while the men proceeded to Houston for the oil convention.

Guaranteed Safety Lets Go Gun Shoots Turner

Deputy Sheriff Elmer Turner was wounded when a so called guaranteed safety on his gun failed. The weapon fell from his holster while he stooped under a car and struck a pipe, piercing his coat and minorly injuring his leg. He was recovering but distrust remains.

Oil Activity Keeps Pace With Completions In Jal Area

The Jal area shows 23 rigs active for the week ending April 21 with two completions and four locations. Wells include Anderson & Prichard No. 5 in section 5-25s-37e drilling 3,552 feet and testing No. 6 in same section. Other rigs drill in sections 32-24s-37e and 27-25s-37e, with depths from 1980 to 3,496 feet. Continues on page 2.

Golfers To Meet Friday Night

L. A. Baird, active promoter of the Jal Golf Club, calls a meeting Friday night to elect officers. Location undecided but may be City Hall or High School. The club has 40 paid members. annual fees total seven dollars, with three dollars yearly and fifty cents per month for eight months.

Merchants Offer Big Bargains in Jal Trades Days

Citizens of Jal Eunice and South Sea County are invited to Jal Friday and Saturday for Trades Days to showcase prices and quality. The monthly event, last weekend each month, features store specials and discounts to attract new customers with sponsorship by the Jar Civic Club.

Baptist Men Plan Monday Man-Boy Dinner at Church

The Baptist Men schedule a Monday night banquet for men and boys of the town at the Baptist Church. The event aims to foster friendship and understanding between the two groups with each attendee bringing a boy. Stuart Long will lead a short walk.

Firemen Plan Slicker Purchase After Fire Damage

Volunteer firemen reviewed losses to their clothing from a recent blaze and considered buying slickers. The department agreed to cover clothing ruined at the fire but would study slicker costs after a note about B. A. Phillips. Joe Scheur was assigned to stay at the station and care for the truck. A brief hose drill followed.

Dr. A. T. Reed of Monahans will hold a clinic at Community Hospital this Saturday offering free consultations and examinations focused on non surgical treatment of tonsils adenoids and related areas. Booster Booth Huggins family traveled to Hobbs to have their son Thomas Huggins treated for a broken leg at the clinic.
