Whitworth seeks relief from pressure as he plans a fishing trip and jokes about golf, while Ed Butler conducts weekend surveys on routes to Abilene and back. Norma Fay Baird improves after a near fatal illness, and the Rotary Club displays growing activity with full attendance and visitors from Santa Fe.
Mr and Mrs E R Dunn were summoned to Andrews to the bedside of his mother who is critically ill. Mrs Cecil Roach and Mrs George Davis traveled to Big Spring to visit Norma Faye Baird.
About 300 Odd Fellows and guests from New Mexico and West Texas gathered in Jal for the new Jal Lodge No. 20 hall opening. Sheriff Horace Owens led the program with remarks by C H Glover and M L Dooley received a ten member pin from the Grand Sire for ten new members. etc
Rev. Hoy Hollis from near Cleveland Texas has been chosen as pastor of the First Baptist Church and will preside at his first service this Sunday. He comes with his wife and grown children who reside away from home. He cites nine years of service at his prior church and sought relocation for his wife’s health.
Mrs Clarence Roach census enumerator announced plans to finish field work this week and asks all uncontacted residents to meet her at the Woolworth Hotel on Saturday for census taking.
George L. Keever Jr., son of Mr and Mrs G L Keever, plans a visit here Saturday after recently recovering from pneumonia.
The Hardin SImmons University Cowgirl Band directed by Herbert M. Preston will give a program in Jal on Thursday at 10 a m under the Jal High School athletic council. Harpist Virginia Sheridan of Houston, a Leopold Stokowski honors winner, headlines the varied program.
Webb Justis and P H Hedges purchased a welding shop in Semi No le. Hedges and his family relocated this week and he will operate the business.
A Hobbs led effort dominated by senior and junior track squads during the Lea County meet. Bill Zahn starred for Jal with 31 points of the 75 total, as Jal seniors outscored rivals while Hobbs earned the county cup using junior points and a recent tennis win. Clemens of Hobbs upset in the 100 yard dash and Grayson of Monument captured the mile, the meet’s lone firsts.
Old and new to meet postmaster Helen Childress as pony express rider Bill Carpenter of Hobbs carries mail from Jal to Hobbs to greet the first airmail flight from Lea County. Hobbs plans an Old West show for May 11 to mark the air service debut.
Band mothers honor the group with a banquet at the Methodist Church on Monday after a standout year. The band excelled at the state contest in Las Cruces last month and will not travel to the national event for which it was eligible.
Mrs. Winters, longtime resident near Jal in Mid land, fell on steps while visiting her daughter and broke her arm in three places. She was wounded Saturday and returned home Tuesday while recovering. Nearby, Mrs. Ike Harbinson returned from Grandfalls after visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs Nehels.
