City aims to secure a lower fire insurance rating after a survey by the United States Inspection Bureau. City Clerk Wood yer Baily sent water line maps and fire plug details, and will present model fire hazard ordinances to the City Council. A preliminary inspection was completed and a follow up visit will occur after ordinances are enacted.
Children of pre school and primary ages were thoroughly checked this week by Dr. Puckett as part of the school health program. Especial attention was given to sight teeth throat and respiratory ailments in the youngsters. Two babies were among the children checked for ailments.
Church members toiled all day Tuesday and near completion of the concrete foundation with foreman Ralph Baird appointed at a Monday night board meeting. Plans continue without delay as building progresses. Director R. L. Meyers presented Melancholy Baby on Jal High Band’s Wednesday concert in the gymnasium.
Formal dedication services are planned for Jal Methodist Church with a 10 30 a m morning program. Rev C Y Butler pastor invites the public to attend the dedicatory address by Rev L B Craven presiding elder. The piece recalls early history with brush arbor services under the Hackberry trees.
Advance ticket sales indicate a large crowd will attend the high school auditorium Friday night for The Magic Piper operetta. About 100 children from the grade school participate in the cast including Herald Dolores Walden Gretchen and other named roles. Tickets cost 10 or 25 cents and dress rehearsal was held Wednesday night.
The sheep demonstration is set for May 9 and 10 at Bill Anderson ranch 14 miles northwest of Lovington. County Agent W. E. Flint will start taking range program applications this week as meetings roll through Crossroads Pitchfork Tatum Highway Prairieview with dates April 12 and 14 and additional details to follow.
First aid tests were given Wednesday night at the El Paso Camp where the men who completed a two week course took the examinations. Mrs. Fred Johnson entertained the El Paso Camp Bridge Club at her home this week.
Thomas Huggins, a high school student, fractured his leg above the ankle during a skating accident at the rink. He was hospitalized in Hobbs and sent home Tuesday night, resting fairly well. Two or three others fell during the tangle. Burnice Kounce escaped injury.
Town officials consider upgrading Bennettville main streets with a charge of $10 per property owner to cover paving and oiling costs. The proposal targets the three perpendicular streets to the entrance and the principal street connecting them.
The Jal area had 22 rigs active with two completions and three locations in the week ending April 7. Wells include Anderson & Prichard No. 5 in section 5-25s-37e at 3 420 feet, Culbertson & Irwin Henry No. 3 in section 26-25s-37e at 3 325 feet with 800 feet oil in hole, Great West Products No. 2 B Leonard in section 32-23s-37e with 1 211 feet, Gulf No. 4 Stuart in section 10-25 5 87e at 4 000 feet, and Humble Oil & Ref No. 1 L State 1980 feet from S and 660.
Jal sportsmen plan to attend the Permian Basin Game and Fish Protective Association barbecue in Monahans Saturday night. Members meet at Jal Hardware Store at 6 p m to arrange transport and pickup passengers. The barbecue begins at 8 p m at Monahans High School athletic field where membership dues are collected.
Practice continues for The Street Called Sham a three act comedy drama. The company plans a performance date of April 22. H. H. Grumke and R. R. Smalley attended a three day Texas New Mexico Pipeline Company convention in Odessa where officials discussed personal problems.
Jal Fire Department members met this week to discuss buying a larger fire truck to improve protection. New fire chief Brooks Brininstool will consult with Mayor H. H. McAllister and the Council on financing. They foresee insurance savings offsetting the purchase cost and note ongoing fire hazard surveys and water conservation measures during training.
Brininstool is appointed as fire chief after Chief Morrison resigned. He becomes head of the department this week and Morrison has joined Walker-Smith Company in Pecos.
Madera and Owen captured first in both calf roping events at the Jak Roping Club meet south of Jal with seven entrants for six places. Arthur Toby and Robert Madera finished second while Harve Black and Rock Ward took two third places. Jim Turner and Billie Turner visited Lane Turner and attended church with Rev. C. Y. Butler. Mark Owen of Roswell, formerly Jal, visited Jal and the civic club.
