Eighty acres of land on the Buffington ranch east of Straightway is leased for a nine hole golf course. About 45 members have joined and the club plans to double that. Rwy. E. Beaird says the course will open to players in ten days at a very reasonable price.
The Permian Basin Game and Fish Protective Association invites sportsmen to a barbecue in Monahans on April 15 as part of a membership drive. Officials from New Mexico and Texas game departments will attend. Chapters are formed in Monahans Odessa Wickett and Winkler County. Hunter Hughes will lead a 6 p m departure from his store to the 8 p m Texas time event.
Last Friday Jal teachers attended a Southwestern New Mexico Education Association meeting while students had a day off. Jal High School Band debuted in new suits and reportedly performed exceptionally well. Church groups met at the W M A Baptist Church with Mrs. R L Robinson presiding and eight members attending. Margaret Littlejohn and Joe Martin obtained marriage licenses at Lovington as Joe Martin works at Maxines.
Jol residents face water shutoff if deposits are not paid by May 1, says Brooks' water superintendent Brininstool. All meters without deposits will be disconnected. The new well is advancing slowly as it is dug rather than drilled.
Mare Humphries promised to improve town streets with a county grader but required buried gas and water lines to avoid contact. He loaned the grader for two days, grading several streets. completion hinges on moving surface pipes, after which oil will be spread to set the grade.
The Grade School will present The Magic Piper an operetta based on the Pied Piper of Hamlin Friday at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Pupils from the entire grade school will perform in colorful costumes with songs and dances.
The Jal Rifle Club sponsored by the Civic Club will begin Monday night in City Hall. L. J. Calley, Civic Club committee chair, called for a 7:30 p.m. meeting to organize a local chapter of the National Rifle Association and outline requirements.
The Jal roping club invites ranch boys to 3 p m roping sessions on the El Paso Camp road south of Jal. Members pay a weekly 60 cent fee that funds jackpots. no admission fee. Recent winners include Jewel Owens Harve Black Malcolm Madera and others with Arthur Toby Rack Ward and Robert Madera placing in events.
Superintendent J T L Burke announced that no school will be in session Friday to observe Good Friday. Hobbs schools also dismiss. Beauford Norton from Portales visits. Crestman couple shop in Hobbs. Jack Key visits Red Butler. Andrew Brown injured by brick fall, treated, released.
In the Jal area 23 rigs were active with one completion and four locations during the week ended March 30. Wells listed include Anderson & Prichard No. 5, Culbertson & Irwin Henry No. 3, Great West No. 2-B Leonard, Gulf No. 4 Stuart, Humble No. 4 Williams, Italo No. 1 Indian Petro. B-4, Italo No. 3-B-27 Carlson, Italo No. 1-B-26, Italo No. 2-B-4 and J. C. Glower No. 1 Christmas, with various depths and casing details noted.
The Hobbs News-Sun entry joins the Permian semi pro league after a league meeting in Odessa. Kenneth Dixon will be business manager and Chick Finley likely coach and manager. Hobbs will field players from Jal Eunice Lovington and local talent with other teams including Odessa Texon McCamey and Crane.
A proposal to create a lake by damming a northern Jal draw near the City park moved forward this week. Hunter Hughes asked the Civic Club to sponsor the plan, estimating a $1000 to $1500 earthen dam with a ten foot depth after rain. State Game Department fish would stock the lake, trees would boost its playground value, and land from Hubbs and Justis would becomes lake area. A. H. Wampus Adams was named committee chairman to study feasibility and seek financial backing.
The Civic Club learned this week that Jal’s armory plans depend on a potential increase in Congressional appropriation for National Guard expansion. The brigadier general in charge said existing funds are allocated and a new appropriation is needed to consider an armory and guard unit here.
A P T A meeting will be held next Tuesday at 7 p m with men in charge and all are invited. Summer Civ ic Club meetings were set for 7 20 p m on Tuesdays. A daughter named Sammie Ray Beckham was born last Tuesday to Mr and Mrs Sam Beckham weighing nine pounds four and a quarter. Harold Waldron from Kermit visited Margaret Massey in Jal Tuesday evening. Ted Shaikewitz, formerly of Jal, visited in Jal on Wednesday and now resides in Eunice.
