Odd Fellows Plan April 22 Lodge Hall Dedication

Odd Fellows met Monday night to plan the grand opening and dedication of their new lodge hall on April 22. They invite six lodges to attend and promise a free barbecue with all trimmings in what may be one of the largest OOF gatherings of the year. Hobbs lodge will perform degrees work.

Rotarians to Attend State Convention In Albuquerque

Jal Rotary members plan to travel to Albuquerque for the state convention with Malcolm Madera J L Burke and Johnnie Connell among those attending. Other notes mention a boxing accident involving Joe Green and family and several local residents traveling or recovering from injuries and illnesses.

Schools to Get $20,000 Budget Reduction

Superintendent J. L. Burke reported at budget hearings in Lovington that Lee County schools will face a total reduction of $20,000 this year. Hobbs schools drop from $119,650 to $177,650, a $2,000 cut, leaving the district master schools with an $18,000 decrease. Transportation funds may be moved to street charges but county maintenance monies remain below last year.

War Veteran V H Gourley Dies in Hobbs

V H Gourley, a war veteran and former Malliburton employee, died in Hobbs on Wednesday and will be buried Friday at 2 30 p m at Carpenter Funeral Home. He is survived by sister Mrs W M Spratt, former Phillips vital superintendent transferred recently to Goldsmith.

Junior Class Play Ready For Saturday

The Junior Class of Jal High School invites the public to the annual Junior Play The Blundering Herd. Cast begs not to be called idiots. Scene set in the romantic West with realistic characters. Madera Elected Officer of Texas New Mexico Pilots

Twelve towns were represented at a Hobbs meeting where the Texas New Mexico Pilots Association formed. B F Hines of Hobbs and Malcolm Madera of Jal were named temporary president and secretary, respectively, with a slate of temporary directors from across New Mexico and Texas.

District Conference Set for Carlsbad by Methodist Churches

Delegates from this district will attend the district conference of Methodist Churches to be held in Carlsbad on Monday and Tuesday. Local delegates have been appointed to attend the event.

Golf Course Fenced As Greens Begin Construction

Fal Country Club reports progress on a new course with fencing finished and greens and fairways partly built. Twenty members exist now with a $25 membership fee hoped to attract more players and fund a clubhouse, with a tournament planned once practice begins.

Census Work Begins With Two Enumerators

Mrs. Clarence Roach started the 1940 census Monday and reported cooperation from residents as she collects required information. L. J. Cauley assists in the area, having handled camps and ranches but illness delayed his return to work.

A Mason’s Club organized Friday night at the Methodist Church with twelve men attending. W. E F. Edwards of Hobbs Lodge acted as secretary. Temporary officers include John Benton as president and John Cornell as acting secretary. Next meeting set to finalize plans and elect permanent officers.
