New Golf Club Being Organized by Odd Fellows

The Odd Fellows lodge hall on the old Collum Garage site is nearing completion and ready for the first meeting Monday night. The hall will host free, unrestrictive programs as the group plans a grand opening on April 15 with visitors expected from nearby towns and degrees to be conferred. Contractor Ralph Baird oversees the fast finish.

Water supply woes hit Jal with low pressure

Residents faced frequent water outages this week as pressure dropped, forcing many to draw water from outdoor hydrants due to the unreliable supply.

Hunting Grounds Promise for Whitworth and Ranch Visit

J. M. Whitworth plans immediate trip to a new hunting area after being told by an old friend from the oil boom that the Ranger area near Eldorado holds abundant quail sheep and deer. The friend claims a brother in law is a game warden who could keep Whitworth’s party away from restrictions. Gene Corley returns to school after an injury sustained during a school activity. Vandals Interfere With Town Easter Egg Hunt

Uninvited vandals took eggs from the town Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Tex Theatre. About 3800 children searched for eggs while authorities traced the robbers, and Ethryn Courtney found the golden egg for a week’s show pass.

Straw Fire Triggers Jal Fire Truck Parade

Jal firemen led about 100 cars in a parade after responding to a reported fire near the Webb Justis house. They found no blaze. the fire was a straw-filled cattle truck near the Gulf station that the Gulf station crew extinguished with a hose. Alarm was reported by M. L. Moore.

Rotarians Hear Updates and Social News

Rotary Club held its regular luncheon with Methodist Church ladies cooking the meal. Mrs Jioe Foster plans to build a small house in Jal beginning this week. Mrs J H Courtney hosted a birthday dinner for her husband. Visitors attended and several notices describe visits and travel. Mrs H L Pound plans to leave for Cushing Oklahoma as her husband transfers with C H Pound Construction for El Paso Natural Gas.

Members Sign Up In Club For New Golf Course

The Golf Committee led by president L A Baird plans a ten day membership drive ending April 2 to gauge interest and fund a new course on the Wilson place north of Jal. J M Whitworth reports twenty pledges already and Gus Kendricks collects fees. If interest exceeds twenty, a club house will be built using old course items like flag poles benches and equipment.

Social Security Numbers Raised In Local Deaths

A local column stresses the importance of social security numbers for workers and after death. An investigation into the last three men who died in Jal sought their SSNs to register with death certificates.

Humphries to Have Minor Operation

Mike Humphries plans a trip to Albuquerque this week to enter a veterans hospital for a minor operation and expects to be away about two weeks. Various local residents attended preester services at the Masonic night and noted a special service called Mounday Thursday at Exster time. Mr. and Mrs. R L Meyers visited relatives in Lamesa after attending events in Odessa where the Fat Stock Show parade passed.

Band Heads to Las Cruces for Friday Trip

Miss Zanelle Post and R. L Meyers serve as official chaperones for the band, which leaves Friday for Las Cruces on a free trip. Soloists will depart Thursday for the band clinic, with the band and sponsors returning Sunday. Attending travelers include Mr. and Mrs. Frank Goodner, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Butler, Mrs. Frank Ikinger, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Cadley, and Mrs. Sally Norfleet.

State University Officials Visit Jal School Assembly

President Zimmerman of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and Dean Bostick of UNM spoke before a Jal school assembly on Wednesday. They discussed the Coronado Expedition and highlighted university facilities available to students.

Tourist Instruction School Held in Hobbs Friday

Invitations were sent to hotels and tourist camps in Hobbs for a tourist instruction school at the Hardin Hotel. The program will run weekly for three weeks and is sponsored by the Hobbs Chamber of Commerce.
