South of the Border play enlivens Apr program at high school

The high school auditorium hosted a Spanish themed program led by Mrs. supervision with Wilbur Crenwelge singing South of the Border. Students portrayed Juanita Biddle Beverly Burke Pancho and others in a tale of bandit danger and rescue. Spanish class performances included La Cucaracha Cielito Lindo and the Mexican Hat Dance. The Spanish class also toured Ker mit and Wink on April 14. Western Gas merges with Gulf States Oil forming Western Natural Gas Company with Houston as new office and Midland as district hub, transferring several employees.

Memorial services were held in Union Hall on Thursday night for 24 Oil Workers Union members killed in the Texas City disaster. A minister of the Church of Christ, Mr John R., led the service honoring the dead.

Ada Mae Hair of Jal was elected Rodeo Queen of Eastern New Mexico College by popular vote on April 17 1947. The event featured a parade at the Fair Grounds with floats from college groups and civic organizations, a coronation on horseback, and rodeo acts including barrel racing bull riding and a cutting horse exhibition with Bob Crosby.

Three new Underwood typewriters were bought from Davis Supply Co. of Hobbs New Mexico for the Jal school. Mrs. Fink uses one in her office and the other two sit in the typing room. James Sloan praised the inverted shift feature.

Hobbs partners P. E. Alexander of Hobbs and C. A. Boyd of Jal organize Al Bo Chemical Company to provide pest control and sanitation services in Hobbs Eunice Jal Kermit and Brownfield. The firm uses 600 pound pressure motor truck units and smaller pumps for inside spraying four times monthly for multiple firms.

Skeletons Found Near Jal And Community Building Progress

Mr. O B Brown of the Texas New Mexico Company reports skeletal remains near Jal sent to the University of New Mexico and identified as a woman and a sixteen year old boy. The Jal Community Building near the Scout Hut advances with four donated lots, an abstract, and a legal opinion. foundations excavated for a 40 by 90 foot structure. Donations of cash labor and materials are recorded in a ledger and a public subscription funds the project seeks broader community support.

Dorothy Huffaker, former Jal resident and current Hardin-Simmons University student, invites Jal High seniors to campus for an April 26 open house. Students will be excused from classes to tour the campus, enjoy a barbecue and festival with parades by bands, and watch an 80 foot ball team exhibition.

Rev. and Mrs. D. S. McCoy the Church of God State Youth Director of New Mexico visited Jal on Friday April 4. In the Young People's service he summarized the Young People's work in New Mexico. They then traveled to Brownfield Texas to visit Mr. and Mrs. D. S. McCoy Sr. parents of the two men.

Fly-Up Ceremony Bridges Brownies To Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts and Brownies held a fly-up ceremony at the 1.C.C.F. Hall on April 28. Mrs. Brooks Brininstool introduced the Brownies Bernice Bowington Constance Marshall Breta Foley Glenda Brown and Barbara Armstrong as they received wings and conferred pins on friends. Barbara Goodwin welcomed the girls into the Girl Scouts and thanked leaders Mrs. C. Hays and Mrs. Halley Ray. Guests were served punch coffee and cake as the Brownies and Girl Scouts sang and presented a folk dance.
