Plus updates on enlistment intentions, a postponed Pure Food Club meeting, John B. Erwin’s illness, home construction near town, and a benefit recital at the Club House raising forty five dollars for hospital care.

Porter Defeats Edlefsen in Prolonged Wrestling Match

Porter of Jackson defeats Edlefsen of Deiggs in a two fall wrestling match. Porter won the first fall after 1 hour 4 minutes with a wrist lock, then secured the same hold to win the second fall in 6 minutes. The bout drew strong Jackson interest, with fans surprised by Porter's control and endurance. Also noted are the Dallas family visiting Jackson, planning relocation to Alaska after departure from the valley.

Citizens are urged to attend a Tuesday evening meeting at the club house to discuss ways and means for cleaning the school house grounds, erecting a large flag pole, and purchasing a flag. All are invited.

Town Election Results and Civic Notices in Town

The annual town election produced Richard Winger as mayor and Chas Fox and Jas Simpson to the council for two years with Chas Wort for one year. C D Reed narrowly defeated for mayor by one vote. Bishop N B Thomas will visit St John’s Church May 13 for Confirmation at 11 am. services at usual hours. Civic League bake sale raised about forty dollars for Red Cross. Rustic porch added to C B R Van Vieck residence with back porch enlargement planned. Phill Korell underwent a successful stomach surgery at St John’s Hospital and is improving.

Baptist Church Mother’s Day Program and Services

The Baptist Church schedules a Mother’s Day program next Sunday evening at 4 00 featuring readings recitations music solos duets chorus and an address on motherhood. Sunday School at 10 30 focuses on Jesus the True Vine from John 15 1 16 with the vine and branches as golden text. Services also occur in Kelly May 16 17 and Buffalo schoolhouse May 20 at 2 00 and 3 00 PM, with all invited.

Community Club Plans Prizes to Aid War Food Effort

A special meeting of the Community Club at St John’s Club discussed postponing the Krontzer Mail due to the war with Germany. Prizes of 8100 and 3100 were offered for best wheat and oats crops on 20 acres of new land in 1918, with judging by quality and yield. The club also promised 100 lb of canning peas free to the first 20 boys who apply, and 10 to the boy with the best yield to cover committee expenses. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Roy Lamb of South Park on Saturday morning.

Annual School Meeting Debates District 20 Taxes

The District 20 annual school meeting at the Club House discussed tax measures with a 1.5 mill maintenance tax defeated and a 32 mill teachers fund tax carried. A 3 mill building tax was approved. plans include a new room at the Jackson school and hiring another teacher. The board will finalize teacher lists soon and consider a Porcupine mouth-of-run school request. Jeers for C. L. Starrett followed news of a broken leg from a rope accident while handling a cow. Dr. Huff reported recovery. Mrs. Roy McBride visited from Flat Creek.
