The water and light works advance with ditching for water mains underway. A large engine-driven ditcher digs 3 to 4 foot deep, 2 foot wide trenches, at about 750 feet daily. In ten days all mains will be laid, and the power house work begins immediately. Jackson will have ample water and lights within four months, spurring growth and better streets in this Missouri town.
In 1857 John Wilkes Booth rose from obscurity by impersonating Black Donald in Mrs. Southworth’s The Hidden Hand at the Grecian Temple. Praised by Southworth, Booth’s portrayal was deemed unparalleled and highly sought after by actors. The Twentieth Annual Convention of the Missouri Christian Endeavor Union will meet in Springfield from October 24 to 27.
