Mrs Columbus Brown and her daughter of Burfordville nearly drowned when floodwater filled a public road three miles north of Whitewater. The buggy and horse floated downstream. the horse drowned, buggy wedged on a fence. Daniel Strader rescued the wet, frightened occupants. they were otherwise uninjured.
Farmers in the Southwest announce a plan to control cotton prices by creating a nationwide storage system. They will weigh and grade stored cotton, issue due bills, set prices, and advance two thirds of value on request. They expect to hold a quarter of U S cotton to influence market prices.
Carl Schurz portrays the Quincy Lincoln Douglas debate with vivid portraiture. He contrasts Lincolns awkward voice and tall ungainly frame with Douglasses short stature broad chest and formidable presence. Schurz also situates the scene amid Concord group and river steamboat anecdotes.
Cape County Milling Company is highlighted as the state’s largest milling enterprise established in 1869 and incorporated in 1895. Leaders A. St. Byrd and J. M. McCombs are praised for public spirit. Jackson mills handle 300000 bushels and 1100 barrels daily, employing over 100 men, with Alsop Process boosting flour quality and Gold Leaf Flour marketed as top product. Heyde, head miller, reportedly earns the second highest salary among U S millers.
A list of property transfers shows multiple deeds in Cape Girardeau and nearby towns. Transfers include Arthur Sander to Annie Sander for lots in West End Place, Hugo Pfisterer to Arthur Sander, and various other swaps of farms and town lots with values from $1 to $3,000. Names include Hartle, Piper, Punch, Davis, Larrimore, Strong, Slinkard, Morgan, Stoler, Ford, Brochelt, Lehner, and others with parcels described by townships and sections.
Last month Goodwin and Jean offered cash prizes for the person marketing the highest number of pounds of turkeys raised by themselves. The lively contest showed Oak Ridge and Jackson residents raise many fine birds. W. H. Dow won first prize, Louis Valle the second, and the show highlighted a robust poultry business in Cape County.
Circuit court convened to hear several whiskey and minor assault matters. A new prosecuting attorney opposes grand jury use this term as jurors listed for the week. The McCain Chiles cutting case went to jury Wednesday and yielded an acquittal after strong prosecuting and defense arguments.
The Houck area reports sacks of wheat spilled on the road between Fruitland and Pocahontas last Saturday when a carload from north of Oak Ridge was likely tampered with. Investigation underway and guilty party to be dealt with. Also notes year start optimism from Mt. Vernon resident T. C. Moss and local moves, deaths, illnesses, and New Year wishes.
On New Year’s Day Oak Ridge celebrated the dedication of a new brick Baptist church costing nearly 5000 dollars. The building stands east of the old frame church. Services featured Rev. T. H. Jenkins and Rev. A. M. Ross with a town hall dinner. Notes were burned after payment. Jackson M W A Lodge held a public installation at the court house and supper for about 400 attendees at the Armory. Officers installed included Chas Behrens and John Seahse with Ex-Venerable Consul George Summers assisting.
The Schubert Symphony Club and Lady Quartette performed at J. M. A. Saturday night to about $100 raised. It was a grand, very classical entertainment showcasing town musical talent. Henry Kurre appeared Wednesday night, became intoxicated, and was fined $5 plus costs after a mayoral trial. he sought an appeal but felt treated unfairly. Acres west of Gordonville offer 70 cleared, timber, 250 acres clover, wheat, and a schoolhouse within half a mile. E. F. Ford, Gordonville, Mo.
Health is generally good and residents enjoyed Christmas as they prepared for the New Year. Farmers face wet weather delaying corn gathering. School closed December 21 and reopened Monday with eager pupils. Free delivery exists but rain kept Charles away. A recent spelling match set a record with all but three spelling correctly. Two elderly locals participated and spelled well.
