Butts County Citizen Seeks U S Marshalship

Cork resident C A Towles pushes candidacy for United States Marshal for the Southern District of Georgia. He has endorsements from most Butts County citizens and many others in the district. Friends expect his application will receive serious consideration and hope he is chosen.

Personalities in and around Jackson and Atlanta

Several residents and visitors were noted in Jackson and nearby areas this week. T. W. Ham and Judge J. H. Ham were seen in Atlanta. S. M. Pope spent Sunday there. J. E. Hale Jr and W. D. Compton traveled through Jackson. W. E. Gray of Covington visited Jackson. J. L. Edwards from Monticello joined for the weekend. J. E. Lane of University, Va. was in the city for a few days. Hon. J. H. Mills of Jenkinsburg appeared Wednesday. T. C. Tucker and John Spearman drove in from Shady Dale on Friday.

Woman's Christian Temperance Union Meeting Agenda

The regular W C T U meeting discussed anti narcotic efforts focusing on cigarettes as a legislative bill opens. A motion urged the city council to install sanitary drinking fountains in school grounds and a petition committee was formed. Next meeting planned at Willard Memorial Day with a program at Mrs. J H Carmichael's home.

E Gardner Dies At 52 In Athens

E June Gardner longtime Athens citizen and editor of The Clarke County Courier died Tuesday evening in an Athens hospital after a ten day illness. He was a prominent figure in local and state politics and a leading Mason.

Men Plan Telephone Line Extension in County Area

W B Hodges W M Bledsoe and George Gilmore living between Iron Springs and Pittmans Ferry plan to extend a private line from John Thomas's place at Iron Springs to Pittmans Ferry. The new line would connect farmers to Jackson and other county points and officials hope the plan materializes.

Flovilla Youth Pleads Guilty in Mail Box Robbery Case

Hugh Gunnels, a 16 year old white boy, admitted guilt in a Macon Federal court for robbing mail boxes at the Flovilla post office. He received four years in the U. S. reformatory in Washington, D. C. Judge Speer noted many Macon boys would benefit from reform. the sentence follows the plea.

Jackson Rifles Prepare for Annual Inspection

The Jackson Rifles drill twice weekly for the annual inspection on February 4. Major F. L. Palmer and Captain J. M. Kimbrough of Atlanta, assigned to the State troops from the regular army, will conduct the review. Local members anticipate the event with interest.

Pension funds not ready for county payments

Judge J H Ham traveled to Atlanta on Tuesday to obtain pension funds for the county. John W Lindsey, Pension Commissioner, said money was not available yet but would be soon. State Treasury funds are currently used for paying state teachers.

Mrs J E Lane of Virginia is feted in the city at a dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs L P McKibben. Guests include Mr and Mrs C W Buchanan and other friends.

Mrs Eliza Jane Johnson Dies in Atlanta at 75

Mrs Eliza Jane Johnson age 75 wife of Dr H B Johnson died at the family home in Atlanta Friday morning after a long illness. A Baptist member since 1866 she was well known in Jackson. She leaves four daughters and two sons from Lilburn Ringgold Melrose Lawrenceville Birmingham. Funeral by Rev William Sinsette was held in Atlanta and burial occurred at Camp Creek Lilburn.

Lee’s Birthday Observed by Daughters of the Confederacy

The Larkin D. Watson Chapter observed General Robert E. Lee’s birthday on Sunday with afternoon exercises at the Methodist church. Pastors from three churches gave talks and Mrs. S. O. Ham led music.

A Thursday evening performance in the Armory by Jackson readers and popular musicians, organized by the Presbyterian church ladies, drew social and financial success, with attendees enjoying a pleasing and profitable event.

City Court Adjourned After Heavy Fines

City Court adjourned Friday afternoon after two busy days last week Judge Fletcher imposed fines on guilty parties Leroy Simms was convicted of larceny from the person and assault and battery each fined 100 or twelve months on county roads Charlie Cooper fined 100 or a year’s work for pointing a pistol Arthur Cook convicted of larceny fined 100 or twelve months in the chain gang Not guilty verdicts went to Clarence Tolleson Julia Petti Er nest King William Turner and John Hodges for various charges.

Smith Repeats as Mayor in McDonough Anew

The Henry County Weekly notes the new City Council took office on the 6th. E. M. Smith remains Mayor and R. L. Turner becomes Clerk and Treasurer. New council members include J. F. M. Fields Joel Bankston D. P. Cook A. N. Brown C. J. Turner and R. L. Turner.
