Union resolutions urge school tax vote and two mill extension

County Farmers Union delegates urge the Board of Supervisors to call an election on a school tax levy and to support a two mill tax for rural school extension and schoolhouse improvements. They back an Agricultural High School, preservation of fertilizer revenue, and registration drives across several precincts with deadlines in July, with thanks to Iuka and surrounding communities for hospitality.

Agricultural High School Location Approved by County Board

The County Locating Board met Saturday with members Carmack Hill Whittaker Stormont Davis present. They visited the dormitory offered by Iuka, clarified the title issue, and unanimously reaffirmed locating the Agricultural High School at Iuka. Trustees elected were J A E Pyle and DC Lock. The opening session aims to serve the county’s farm families.

Drowned Boy Clarence Briggs at Bear Creek Crossing

A 15 year old enslaved boy named Clarence Briggs drowned in Bear Creek near Eastport while helping a ferry passenger cross a rising swift river. His companion, Ala Sharp of Waterloo, Alabama, survived by swimming ashore after the ferry boat began to sink. The perilous crossing has claimed prior drownings. the incident underscores dangerous conditions when the creek rises.

Sheriff Payne Reports Farm Work Then Local News Notes

Sheriff E A Payne spent last week on Indian Creek supervising a large fertile corn field. Fri day evening hail east of town damaged crops and leaves. The Farmer's Union notices and Viperre column are showcased. Mr. and Mrs. J E Harris visited, and Harris testified in the Alabama v Ed Greer mule theft case in Tuscumbia. Foley’s Honey and Tar advertised. A horse and mare were rescued after an accident near the McKinney trestle. W T Bennett returned from Jackson after serving in the legislature. Glidden touring car passed through Inka via Nashville to Memphis. H B Dameron will build a residence on Bear Creek farm bought from J W Garrett.
