Irvington High librarian turns indexing into hobby
Miss Vernelia Crawford, Irvington High School librarian, indexes books as a part time pursuit. She has produced about 60 indexes for works ranging from economics to political science, many for the William Volker Fund. Indexing takes 100 to 300 hours per volume and often requires separate indexes for people and ideas. She believes readers benefit when the indexer considers the reader’s perspective and collaborates with authors or editors.

Irvington earns AAA pedestrian safety award for three years
Irvington on Hudson New York earned a citation from the American Automobile Association for three consecutive years without a pedestrian fatality. The award was presented June 18 at a luncheon in the Statler Hilton New York City. Attending were Harold Meszaros Police Chief James Sansevera Vincent L Tofany Gilbert Phillips and 56 award winning communities in New Yorks southern counties.

Sgt Mark Thompson Receives Vietnam Medals
Sgt Mark Thompson was awarded three medals for service against enemy forces on February 21 in Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam. He earned the Air Medal and two Bronze Stars, one with a V device for Valor, at Fort Dix's Watson Hospital following overseas duty with the 1st Air Cavalry Division starting August 1967. He is married to Marion Orr, residing with her parents at 41 North Broadway.
