The year ahead urges hope and improvement. It notes 1949’s demand for better train service in Irvington and calls for community programs to enhance life, urging readers to support efforts for a better year and to press the railroad to recognize the need.
A policy argument rejects direct federal fiscal handouts to states and localities. It contends centralized funding weakens local problem solving, increases dependencies, and shifts tax burdens via town and county levies. The Greenburgh New York board of education met December 2, 196, to address the payment of a $55,000 Bond Anticipation Note and $60,000 Serial School Bonds. The firm Brcon Stevenson and Cooter was approved to buy bonds for $10,800 at 290 percent. W. E. Lockwood acted as president.
The January meeting of the Women’s Association of the Irvington Presbyterian Church was postponed after George B. Gibbons & Co offered to buy bonds for 1006 per 1000 with 6 interest. The event, originally set for January 4, now resumes with officers for 169 to be elected and a continuation on page five.
The State Division of Housing says a village program in Irvington cannot proceed under current law. Despite possible construction of 26 units, the village cannot incur more than 2 percent of assessed value in debt, about 200000 on Irvington’s 13000000 valuation. Private limited dividend housing could serve middle income families with tax exemptions and private operation, but the present costs and debt limits make fewer than 26 units infeasible.
Miss Alice Kennedy Jones of Hudson House is engaged to Snowden Taylor of New York. A Barnard College attendee and descendant of Cyrus Field, she is connected to Judson and Vallance families of New York. Taylor, son of George Winship Taylor, served in the Coast Guard and studied at Stevens Institute in Baltimore.
The Cedar Ridge Unit of the Testchester Home Bureau will meet Thursday January 6 at 1 00 PM at Mrs. Mitton's home on Hillside Terrace Biortstad. Mrs. Roswell Harriman will give instruction on making fabric gloves.
Greenburgh Town Board tabled a tax exemption petition for a Dobbs Ferry Road property tied to the Philippines Consul General project. Officials questioned eligibility, zoning, and whether the residence qualifies for exemption under a treaty context, with further meetings planned.
Me and Mrs John Dorazio of waond R Ty announce the engagement of their daughter oho Resle, daughter of Mr and Mrs Gerardo Reale of Sunnyside Lane. Resle is a graduate of Esmond High School and attended art school in Providence. Keale attended Irvington Schools and is associated with his father in the trucking business. No date has been set for the seating.
The Tevington Board of Education at a special meeting awarded a $4000 serial bond issue for high school improvements and other authorized works. Irvington National Bank and Trust Company bid $4008 at 1.70 percent interest, with four bids received from Bacon Stevenson & Co, Gen H Gibbons & Co, Roosevelt & Cross, and WE Lockwood.
The Children’s Museum in Tre Region announced gifts from Mrs. George Wagner including two large Tapa elk from the South Pacific a pair of Chinese shoes and a collection of fad visual prints and etchings. An expanded schedule will divide first through third grade groups due to high attendance with transportation and due date constraints. The fourth grade and up arena moves to Thursday afternoon. the Explorers Club will discontinue.
Dr. Ralph M. Houston of Yonkers will be guest minister at St Pauls Methodist Church Sunday morning January 2, officiating elder and district superintendent of the New York District. Newly elected officers of the Women’s Society of Christian Service will be installed during the service as part of a four week loyalty campaign.
The Tivington Police court held two cases from Sewel River Parkway on Wednesday. In both instances the defendant was Snedde aS. The holiday season and the poor street condition reduced traffic violations to zero for the period.
Fragmented notice notes New Year s Day masses at the Church of the Immaculate Conception with multiple service times and Benediction after the 10 30 service. It mentions births and local names and a speeding ticket in White Plains with several garbled references to individuals and places.
One hundred youngsters at Irvington House convalescent home enjoyed a New Year party staged by the Masons of New York. The auditorium was turned into a night club with tables and decorations while funds from the Masonic Foundation for Medical Research support rheumatic fever studies. The event, arranged by Robert Howard of the Hotel Astor, featured 200 pounds of candy and cake and included remarks by Grand Lodge officers and Foundation leaders.
Village Clerk Knute Wistrand reported that by January 3 the second and final 1948 tax installment totalled 89 percent of the 181 017 levy, with 160 900 21 collected and 20 206 61 remaining before Monday night. A 2 percent late penalty will apply if unpaid. About 43 000 has been set aside for loan repayment, and remaining funds will cover operating expenses until the fiscal year ends February 28.
The Irvington Fire Department hosts its sixty second annual ball at the town Hall on Friday evening February 18. James Downey of 79 South Eckhout Street chairs the committee and aims to make it one of the most successful events yet with outstanding entertainment including a top radio feature. Dancing will follow the program with a live band.
Mrs. Jane Coyle widow of James Coyle and longtime resident of Pennybridge Glenville died at Grasslands Hospital early Wednesday after a long illness. Funeral services will be at Grace Episcopal Church Whit Plains Friday at 11 a.m. Rev Alfred Arnold will officiate with burial in Old Dutch Quaven yard South Tarrytown. She was born to Tate and Jane Dennis on Broadway near the Presbyterian Church in Pennybridge. Surviving: daughter Miss Margarett Coyle of Glenville two brothers George and Edward Dennis and two sisters Mrs Arthur Lynch and Mrs George Haversback of Tarrytown.
