Irvington Volunteers Handle First Call Amid Local Turmoil
The Volunteer Ambulance Corps answered its first call transporting an Irvington resident to Cross County Hospital Yonkers from Idlewild Airport after arriving in Europe. The Volunteer Fire Dept canceled the final two days of its bazaar, ending a three day run last week as the USS Forrest Sherman Navy destroyer was set to visit Irvington. A new war memorial near the high school rises seven feet high and nearly nine feet wide. A severe thunderstorm toppled a tree on Main Street opposite the high school, partially blocking eastbound lanes and prompting traffic control by police. Ten years ago, Irvington saw Dial service begin and local athletes excel at the Area II Playground Olympics. Fifteen years ago librarianship changes and golden wedding anniversaries were celebrated. Twenty years ago a rail wreck delayed commuters and youths faced fines for swimming near the reservoir. Twenty-five years ago the school district reported reduced costs and local residents planned moves and openings. Thirty years ago local births and hospital visits marked community life. Thirty-five years ago residents vacationed across the region as others attended events. Forty years ago a local fisherman was saved by a young hero in the Hudson. Fifty years ago overseas service and postwar relief dominated the news. Sixty years ago Charles Timm and others worked in the town continued on next page.

Tiny Mite Trouble on Trees and Plants This Summer
Mites damage trees shrubs and flowers by sucking plant juices. Detect them by shaking twigs on white paper to spot tiny dark specks. Bronze dusty leaves mid summer signal mite injury. Spraying with miticides is best, with a possible second spray after two to three weeks. Some sprays kill adults not eggs and some mites can have several generations per season.
