Diphtheria Closes Hawarden Schools and Public Gatherings

A Treton letter reports panic in Hawarden over diphtheria. Schools closed May 10, public meetings halted, churches shuttered for two weeks, and Rev. Suckow’s lecture canceled. Families suffer losses as three children die in three months. Sioux River rising hinders mail service at Calliope.

Sioux City and Ireton Electric Railroad meeting

A well attended meeting at Vietho's hall last Saturday gathered farmers and town residents to discuss the Sioux City and Ireton electric railroad. Chair F F Parringer and Secretary J A Linderman led proceedings with speakers Dickson Weldon and others outlining progress and potential town support. A general meeting of township committee members is planned tomorrow at Center and Howe in Preston township.

Professor Hannum Named Ireton Public Schools Principal

Roy F. Hannum was elected to lead Ireton public schools at a board meeting last Saturday. He is a Mt. Pleasant Academy graduate and completes his University course at Iowa City this spring. The current teaching staff includes Miss Overtholser, Rhynsburger, and Arndt Abia, with the grammar teacher position to be filled soon.

Memorial Day Plans for Ireton Churches

Memorial services in Ireton will be held at the park if weather allows with local leaders delivering key addresses. Dr HB Wallsee will give the Memorial address, Rev J P Lina will preach the memorial sermon at First Presbyterian on May 28, and other ministers including Rev J Arthur Edwards and Rev H Grimm are invited to assist. A full program will follow in the Ledger.

Surgeons Operate On Ray Phillips For Appendicitis

Doctors Dre Mosher and McCaughan performed an operation on Ray Phillips for appendicitis last Sunday. A large amount of pus filled the appendix making the case unusually serious, but the procedure was successful and the patient is recovering nicely. E R Parker administered the anesthetic.

Chance Jin Trains Expand Sioux City Route

Starting next Monday morning passenger No 8 will depart Hawarden at 9 25 a m and reach Sioux City by about 11 00 a m remaining on the same train to avoid Alton. A 4 p m Sioux City to Hawarden trip will instead head west to Ireton arriving 6 05 p m. Evening eastbound service will stop at Alton connecting to Sioux City next morning. This creates a same day round trip to Sioux City from Traton with about five hours there.

Mrs Stolze Declared Sane by Orange City Board

Mrs M C Stolze was brought before the board of insanity at Orange City yesterday and adjudged sane. She is described as afflicted with nervous hysteria and believes everyone intends harm. After several months of hospital treatment she is expected to recover. the family has the community’s sympathy.

Educational Notes on Attendance and Classes

No tardies in the last month of the first primary. School closes June 2 for summer vacation. Anns Eblera and Glee Wilson have been absent several days. Grammar grades show fine work in penmanship. Miss Sargeant is an excellent instructor in penmanship. Miss Edith Fosburg visited the first primary Thursday afternoon.
