Sweeney and bum tale leads to arrest and suit in county notes

A derelict known as Sweeney roamed Alton after a bank of events. He slept by the river, woke robbed $43 and a watch, used a telephone loudly and was arrested for indecent language. Sheriff Henry noted Sweeney, discharged from the 18th U.S. infantry, was allowed to go. A. L. Scott sues B. Stout for $500 damages over a farm lease dispute in Eagle township. Other county seat notes include legal filings and upcoming September term cases.

Invention by Preston and Garret touted in Sioux City news

A Sioux City Tribune report describes an electronic device enabling long distance telephone conversations without voice loss. Inventors E. W. Preston and M. C. L. Garret, both from Sioux City area, claim the instrument intensifies and clears tones when connected to lines. Preston, a self made former newsboy and telegraph scholar, is expected to gain wealth if successful. Kansas farmer D. A. Wheeler notes Omaha-like growth and better rainfall after years of drought and predicts lasting soil culture benefits.

Barber Shop Change Hands In Tre ton Area

Cartana Sel's barber shop in Treton is sold to Albert Blackmer as Cartana prepares to move his wife to Colorado for health reasons. Blackmer plans to hire a new barber. Cartana will assist before departure. The Treton community holds the Cartana family in high esteem and wishes Mrs Cartano improvement.

Americans Celebrate Fourth of July in Sweden

A letter to J. A. Jenson from sister Miss Leos Jenson describes a summer colony of about thirty Americans at Karlshamn Sweden. They held a Fourth of July celebration in American style with Old Glory and firecrackers, though she dislikes the locale and plans to return to the United States in a couple of months.

Death by Own Action Near Granville

Henry Ablers committed death by own action by hanging himself in a corncrib at his son’s home three miles west of Granville on Wednesday of last week. No cause is given for the act. he had been somewhat demented since a head injury fourteen years ago left him unconscious for hours and impaired his mental faculties.

Lutheran Pastor Ordained at Hawarden Service

Rev. Walter Rehwaldi was ordained and installed as pastor of the Lutheran church in Hawarden last Sunday afternoon. The Hawarden congregation with nearby members attended despite cloudy weather. guests from Ireton joined. Rev. Hugo Grimm preached on Eph 3:8, assisted by Rev. GC Dr Nueffer. Miss Martha Kluther played the organ.

Picnic ends in fine humor after missing water incident

A Sioux Center picnic on the West Branch drew about twenty youths who hunted water with no luck until liveryman Henry De Mots produced two pony kegs. The party stayed for a concert and later returned home in the dawn light.
