Readability Study Marks Negro Press Progress at National Meeting

Charles J. Smith, 23, Savannah State publicity director, presented his master's thesis at the National Negro Publishers association meeting in Houston. Using the Flesch formula, his study argues the Negro press achieves standard readability with readers of seventh or eighth grade education and notes it writes down more effectively than the White press. Notable papers at the meeting included the Cleveland Call and Post, St Louis American, Michigan Chronicle, Chicago Defender, Pittsburgh Courier, Afro American, Journal and Guide, and Louisville Defender.
