Ronald Gear of the Development Commission notes 217 Iowa communities have received nearly 102 million dollars in Federal funds through the 701 planning program. Since its 1959 national start, Iowa joined in 1960 and now has 5 500 active programs nationwide. The plan coordinates recreation transport education water and sewer needs to avoid duplicative spending and guide future growth. Local costs total about 3.9 million with federal 2.4 million, state 333 thousand and local governments just over 1 million.
