Farmers Raising Own Food Supply During Wartime

A field man for the U S Department of Agriculture says farmers are increasingly self sufficient in food since before the Civil War. New York and New England areas see farmers growing wheat barley and buckwheat for home use. In 1918 forest receipts totaled over 3.7 million dollars with livestock leases timber sales and water permits contributing additional funds. Liberty Bond conversion deadlines loom and local ads seek property for sale including a 360 acre ranch in Omak Washington and a Rocky Point Wyoming home with farm labor needed.

C. L. Clark, district director, advertises bids for a schoolhouse near New Hills Creek West, Wyoming. Specifications call for a 16 by 26 foot building with stone foundation, 6 inch ground clearance, log construction details, rafters 2 by 6 inches, lath and plaster finish, two 12 by 25 inch windows, two privies, white paint, brick chimney, 40 rod fence, and a No. 1 red shingle roof. Hulett School Opens September 3 1918

Hulett school opens on September 3 1918 with Miss Elizabeth Freeborn of Swanton Nebraska in charge of the High School Department. She is a Swanton graduate and Peru State Normal alumna holding a Nebraska life certificate and has taught successfully. Miss Myrtle Freeborn will lead the Primary Department with music ability and piano skills. The board aims to hire a good teacher for the Intermediate Department. Contributed.

Teachers Institute Closes After Successful Session

The Teachers Institute concluded Friday with teachers and instructors staying through the final session. Grace Reed Porter assisted by Myra K. Peters of Lead and L. O. Osgood of Bridgwater led portions of the program. The Lead Girls Glee Club performed, and a large audience enjoyed the program. An exhibit for the State Fair was planned, and the Junior Red Cross section drew praise from Red Cross speaker Mr. Knapp. State Department official Mr. McDonough spoke on school legislation, salaries, taxation, consolidation, and minimum levy. Wounded Lieut Martin Reports Soissons Fight Details

In a Belle Fourche Bee letter Lieut Martin describes the July 10 French American attack at Soissons. Ralph Hickey and others were wounded. Martin suffered an abdominal wound but will recover. He notes heavy combat, many wounded, few killed, and a German prisoner remarking Americans fought wildly.
