At Riverhead Mattituck auto derby on September 29 Herbert Lyttle and his mechanic James Bates were killed after Lyttle's Apperson car crashed two miles west of Mattituck. Bates died soon after. Lyttle, who had earlier battled steering trouble, finished second in the handicap race.
