The torso of a young woman about 18 was found stuffed in a sack and sunk in a creek south of Detroit. The body was nude, with no identification, and authorities began dragging the creek to recover the remaining parts, his water exposure believed to be several days old.
Labor day events in Indianapolis closed mills and shops for part of the day and drew thousands in a downtown parade led by Grand Marshal S. S. Willoughby. Speakers at Labor Park included William L. Taylor and Congressman Bernard Korbly. A labor union baseball game followed with seventy three unions represented.
J. M. Elder’s large frame barn burned early Monday causing $500 loss. Firefighters reached a mass of flames as a spark shower ignited Horace Haynes’s roof and damaged homes of George Bruckner and H. B. O’Mann with losses between $6 and $100, while the fire box was pulled from six blocks away.
Mrs. Lucy Hart 726 Delaware Street reports Otto Bauke 27 tried to abduct her while she rode with her husband. Bicycle officers Schlangan and Hartsell detain Bauke for loitering as she and her spouse were out buggy riding. Bauke claims he is infatuated and cannot live without her.
Frederick Kahle a 52 year old grocer and butcher locked himself in his room at 1001 West Michigan and after two failed suicide attempts with a wire and hanging, cut off his left hand with a cleaver and bled to death. Friends had prevented earlier self harm and Kahle was described as mentally unbalanced.
Emerson Denton aged 24 a city engineer's rod man and local political figure died Sunday morning in a room above the saloon he ran at 615 West Washington. Cause cited as a complication of diseases. Denton helped promote the city employees picnic the day before at Grove on West Washington. He became delirious and was kept in bed by friends. The saloon, believed to be owned by Mike Garvey, was managed by him. Denton’s body was taken to his home at 46 North West Street. Funeral set for Tuesday afternoon. He leaves a widow.
The fifty-eighth Indiana State Fair opens with Labor Day discounts and free admission for veterans and children. President Hadley and Secretary Downing forecast a record first-day crowd. Races, bands, vaudeville, a dirigible flight, and extensive exhibits mark the opening with heavy car traffic and busy hotels as thousands attend.
Plainfield Indiana hosts the eighteenth Keeley graduates reunion scheduled for tomorrow with former attendees and organizers expected to gather at the event site.
Baltimore and Ohio detectives search for a motive after the Royal Blue Flyer wreck near Newcastle Pennsylvania. Suspects Henry McConahy and Frank Coates deny knowledge of the disaster which killed three and injured many.
Indianapolis and Louisville will play a double-header Tuesday afternoon. The announcement came this morning.
Cobalt Ontario reports the Wettlaufer mine shipped 3 carloads of first grade ore by CPR to Perth Amboy. The 50 900 pound car valued at 25 959 dollars carried 400 ounces, moved from Wettlaufer to the lake for transport to the CPR. Keeley and Mont Rose prospects expected to follow with large shipments soon.
In Pittsburg on Labor Day the Roman Catholic church formally recognizes the holiday. Special masses were held at St. Pauls cathedral and a solemn high mass at 10 o clock. Father Joseph L. Quint preached on The Necessity of Religion as Applied to the Solution of the Labor Problem and reviewed industrial conditions.
In Patrick Murphy's saloon at 249 Miley Avenue a man stabbed Herman Straub above the stomach during a Sunday melee. Straub is at City Hospital with nonfatal injuries. Murphy was arrested and charged under the Nicholson law.
Ed C. Jones’s grocery at 1201 N Senate Avenue was robbed Saturday night of $15 and a quantity of provisions.
Wilson Loving, a Black poolroom keeper at 524 Indiana Avenue, shot Wiley Daniels in self defense during an altercation. Loving fired twice after Daniels entered the room, assaulted him, and fled across the street before collapsing. Daniels is from Cairo, Illinois. detectives Kruger and Kurtz arrested Loving nearby.
John C Have meyer sugar trust millionaire and author is dangerously ill at his Yonkers home from a nervous breakdown linked to the disappearance of his secretary and business manager Osenar Boy and heavy work in the religions field. No clue to Boy’s whereabouts.
E. F. Penney of Warsaw Missouri visits Indianapolis after four decades away attending the state fair. He is a prosperous Missouri farmer visiting relatives in Indianapolis and Putnam county where he once lived. He is impressed and surprised by Indianapolis growth into a metropolitan center and Indiana’s prosperity.
A Central avenue street car struck a dray at Thirty-fourth street and Gilford avenue on Saturday night. Injured were William Harvey motorman with a broken leg, Morris Waddsworth drag driver with a broken nose and facial cuts, and Mrs Mattie Hoover a passenger bruised. The crash was blamed on absent street lights.
Beverly Mass September 6 Constables who came into town to attend court described capturing President Taft as he sped into their auto trap in Newbury yesterday afternoon They released him after realizing the motorist was the president and did not summon him to court
The Prohibitionists meet in the criminal court room this evening to nominate nine candidates for mayor city judge city clerk and one candidate from each of six councilmanic districts.
Brescia Italy Sept 6 Repairs began on the Wright machine after Lieut Calderara, Italian pupil of Wilbur Wright, endured a second crash. He was injured yesterday when the aircraft smashed, narrowly missing him. in the first accident he had several broken bones.
A British report says on MaHicola in the New Hebrides cannibal savages attacked the French steamer Quadalig during a gale. Eleven crew were massacred and the cargo looted after the ship was driven ashore. The captain and crew fought bravely but were killed. locals killed the wounded by torture.

A Peru interurban car rear ended a Broad Ripple streetcar on Fifty sixth Street injuring two women Mrs J W Ford and Miss Elva Gunning who were dislodged from their seats. Passengers helped release the Broad Ripple car and no other injuries were reported.
Mrs Theodore Roosevelt has rented a house in Khartoum and will spend several months there next year while awaiting her husband’s return from the jungle. Adolph Mayer, kin of King Menelik of Abyssinia, says Mayer’s committee is in town to buy supplies for his government.
Judson Gibbons of Plainfield and Minnie Robertson of Mooresville were married at the Ballard in Indianapolis by Rev. Albert Gurwood Detch at 10:30 a.m. Sunday after slipping from friends to wed in the city.
