London dispatch reports Gen. White and Buller confirming daily heavy gun bombardment on Ladysmith with few casualties. Boers send truce party from Transvaal. later exchange fire near our pickets as entrenchments strengthen and British provisions remain ample. Refuges are sent to British headquarters.
Col. Charles Schneidler of South Chicago advocates aiding the Boers and plans to form a veteran regiment to march to South Africa. He says most recruits will be veterans of the Franco Prussian War.
The transport Roslin Castle with Gen Hildyard and about 1000 men reaches Cape Town and sails to Durban. Four additional transports with the rest of the Second brigade follow and are due at Cape Town. The arrival adds 4500 troops and naval guns for Pietermaritzburg defense as White’s position remains uncertain and British artillery response is limited.
Berlin report says the kaiser and the czar reached an important understanding at the Potsdam conference. Details are unavailable but it is stated that both agreed not to intervene in the South African war and to deter other powers from doing so.
The Greenfield Indianapolis electric railroad extends west to Cumberland and aims to reach Irvington by December if weather stays favorable. The Kentucky race between Goebel and Taylor remains tight with 97 of 119 counties reported. The home of Sect Butler, president of Butler College, was robbed Wednesday evening of all silverware except a single ladle. The couple were at home but unaware of the crime until the next day. Their son and daughter were at a party in Irvington and noticed nothing amiss upon returning home.
Frederick W. Chislett superintendent of Crown Hill cemetery has died and his body arrived from Pittsburg. Funeral is private at 3 p.m. Saturday at his home in the cemetery with honorary pall bearers listed and cemetery employees serving as active pall bearers. Dr J A Milburn will conduct services and burial is in lot section 14 near the hill.

In Manila reports, nineteen American soldiers and officers charged an insurgent trench near Bamban. They killed 19 insurgents, captured 50 rifles, and took six prisoners as roughly 100 attackers were overwhelmed. Thirty-six Spanish prisoners were rescued and Dagupan forces were surprised. Gen Wheaton plans eastward move to link with Gen Lawton against Aguinaldo’s main army.
General Wheaton's forces landed at San Fabian, Lingayen Gulf, establishing a base before insurgents could unite. The Bennington arrived with details correcting earlier reports of landing south of Dagupan and used shelling from gunboats Helene Princeton Callao Bennington and Samar to cover the operation.

President Schurman of Cornell and of the Philippines commission told the Buffalo Equality Club that the United States must keep the islands and educate their people. He argued annexation was opposed, but governance and equality require the U S to remain and elevate the Filipinos to American standards.
A rear collision between Vandalia freight No 22 and No 36 near Reelsville Indiana on Thursday night left three engineers injured and widespread damage. Eight or nine cars plus a caboose were demolished and eighteen other cars derailed. one car carried whisky and spilled liquor left locals drunk. The engine from No 36 dragged a hog car with one pig killed.
Gov Mount reviewed accusations that Dr Edenharter of the Central Insane Hospital pressured attendants to influence voting in the mayoral election. Ambrose Schuler denied claims while Albert Rounder testified to threats. Mount found no bias in Edenharter’s conduct.
