Rail washouts cripple Indiana lines after heavy weekend storms

A Saturday cloudburst battered Indiana railroads with widespread washouts. Major damage hit the Pennsylvania Louisville division at Scipio Elizabeth town and near Seymour, delaying or halting service. The Big Four faced several washouts but resumed trains by Saturday morning. A lone B and O line train arrived in Indianapolis about 100 miles off its route from St Louis to Cincinnati.

Big Four Wreck Near Shelbyville Trains Delayed

The Chicago express on the Big Four left the track after a washout three and a half miles above Shelbyville Indiana on March 6. All passengers were moved to Indianapolis and trains to Cincinnati will struggle to run until Sunday night or Monday. The engineer reversed the engine when water covered the rails, the train broke, one sleeper remained on the safe side, the rest slid down the bank but did not topple. All passengers were safely removed.

Narrow Escape of the Fuller Family in Flood Gas Leak

Hector Fuller of the News experienced a frightening flood incident Friday night. Mrs. Fuller woke him to a gas leak in the house and he searched the lower levels and cellar where knee deep water had extinguished boiler fires. He searched by moonlight in night clothes for a valve, avoiding flames to prevent explosion.

The Society of Western Artists opened an exhibit at the Propylaeum featuring 263 pictures across styles.
