The Monterey disaster dominates the scene with hundreds dead and thousands left helpless. Reyes and Diaz report the civil war's plots overshadowed by the catastrophe as relief efforts rally at the graveside.
Amos Hess a 72 Colorado avenue paperhanger spent hours joy-riding at $1 per 20 minutes then turned himself in claiming a party robbed him of $19.25. Found money in his pocket, he was charged with drunkenness and fined $11. He hoped his wife would return home from the country as the tale unfolded with a divorce suit and assault claims.
The American National Red Cross issued a statement in Washington on August 31 about Monterey flood relief. It says thousands are homeless and the entire population has suffered, with perhaps 3100,000 needed to meet current emergencies and donations directed to the War Department in Washington, D. C.
Gen Reyes, opposing Diaz and a presidential hopeful, leaves his mountain retreat to aid Monterey relief work as destruction from the cyclone devastates the region. Death toll and property loss mount, with millions in damages and thousands homeless.
Vibrations of a 16 minute earthquake shock were recorded today by the seismograph at St Ignatius college in Cleveland Ohio. The tremor lasted from 6 11 to 6 27 and was stronger than the previous day’s Panama quake.
John Cowhers a market huckster was arrested after Inspector Isidor Wulfson charged he sold three pecks of tomatoes as a bushel. The incident occurred Tuesday morning at 949 W Twenty Fourth Street.
London reports Prince and Princess Kuni of Japan boarded the Carmanta for New York to witness the Hudson-Fulton centennial events next month. They will join dignitaries and observers at the historic celebration.
Willie Wilkins of Chester Avenue faced Judge Stubbs for beer drinking. The court ordered the 10 year old held until a country home is found. The boy’s father admitted he cannot control him. Three minor saloon patrons John Denny Harrison Miller and Harry Little were fined 25 each and given 30 day workhouse terms suspended if they behave.
In Brooklyn, the St Malachi's Catholic orphan home burned with 500 children asleep. Father Kirby and sisters organized a fire drill and led many to safety before flames trapped others. Seven bodies were found in a second floor room as searchers continued through ruined halls.
Charles Fike and his son Everett were found hiding in a basement at 2021 Shelby street after a long search by Indianapolis and St Louis authorities. William Fike and Harry Sage were charged with concealing the fugitives and with weapons violations. Maggie Peterson testified of kidnapping but Everett denies marriage or abduction. The case links to a June 11 alleged murder attempt on Mrs Fike and a later escape to St Louis.
A lone robber halted the Pittsburgh express No. 39 near Lewistown Narrows, firing on conductor A A Poffenberger and looting bags of money and bullion from the express car. He forced the crew to reveal the safe contents and escaped with a substantial cash haul.
Pittsburg officials announce possible early settlement of the Pressed Steel Car strike. District Attorney Blakeley will pursue criminal charges against strike breakers, with federal probes into peonage, contract labor, and immigration. Defense efforts reference alleged armed guards preventing workers from leaving trains at Trenton, Philadelphia, Altoona, Harrisburg, and other points.
The Sherman anti trust law amendment committee met in New York to plan preventing overcapitalization of interstate railroads with Attorney General Wickersham presiding. The commission outlined its program from a Beverly conference with President Taft.
A conference in Pittsburg on the powder issue raised the possibility of a general strike from 25 000 to 35 000 miners in the district unless an amicable solution is reached. Three more mines in the Youghiogheny river district remain closed awaiting conference results with National Chairman Lewis and state officers of coal operators in attendance.
H J Heinz the pickle man has taken control of the Winona Interurban Railway company linking Warsaw and Goshen. Officers elected include President H J Heinz Vice President and GM C C Johnson and Secretary H C Anderson. Offices will be in Warsaw. A new line is being built from Warsaw to Peru Indiana.
William Donahue aged 48 was arrested by Bicycle Policemen Mullin and Englebright after hours of search for entering several Geisendorf street homes by prying windows and scaring women. He waived examination and was sent to the grand jury. Witnesses identified him at multiple addresses with reports of 3 to 4 am breakins.
Charles Stewart a Black reporter from a Negro newspaper was arrested by northwest precinct officers Schiangan and Martesell after his wife alleged he attacked her at Eleventh and West streets. Stewart faced charges of assault and battery carrying concealed weapons and disorderly conduct.
Quincy Parrish seeks divorce from Alice alleging curses and neglect including meals. Syrena Haggard accuses Ira C. of gambling and seeks divorce. Margaret Poland sues Nathaniel for legal separation claiming domestic violence and failure to provide.
