Charley Jones arrives in Mount Jackson driving a Johnson Transfer wagon loaded with 77 empty barrels. He turns a corner at Delaware and Oniosts and loses control Monday morning. A roar erupts as barrels topple across the street, a boy sits astride a barrel on the curb, the driver and Jones fall, but neither is hurt.
Dr. E Arlington Pond describes a June Philippine battle where Major Bubb's Fourth infantry battalion faced arrayed Filipinos. He details fighting conditions a rain of bullets, wounded in a hopeless encounter, and reports dead soldiers mutilated with ears cut off and eyes dug out.
In Sioux Falls Aug 21 Senator Pettigrew received a Nagasaki cablegram from Dr R C Warne major surgeon of the First South Dakota volunteers stating he was arrested by Frost, a conclusion from a letter Warne published last month calling Col Frost a low contemptible cur and accusing him of seeking personal gain at the expense of the regiment.
Secretary Root and his private secretary Mason depart at 4 pm Monday for Plattsburg New York for a second conference with the president on the Philippines situation General Merritt reportedly joins the discussions though no change in commanders is expected Otis would be given full swing and a fair trial
Nine soldiers of the Twenty-fourth Infantry were drowned near Manfla when a raft broke apart on the San Mateo river. The men were returning from a reconnaissance expedition.
Building inspector Robinson announced he will take no further steps to enforce a city smoky chimney ordinance. Superintendent Quigley says enforcement is not his duty and that the city attorney says it is everyone's responsibility. The measure lacked administration backing and has seen almost no enforcement since passage.
Red Cross solicitor G. Jordan announces Porto Rican relief drive with school buildings in each district to serve as depositories. Janitors will handle donations, with Thursday set as a main contribution day. Partnerships include H M Wright, Hollweg Reese Ahnley McCrea OW D Copperage and others.
A letter from the Arctic circle dated July 21 lists over 160 men who entered the sound country and have since perished including Charles A. Leonard and G. E. Muler with causes such as heart failure and scurvy. The message warns of more deaths in winter and mentions a murder by Indians of the Pickering brothers. In Santa Barbara a criminal court motion to quash, by Horace Smith for several alleged milk adulterators, challenges the milk seizure law as unconstitutional and argues the compensation provided is not due.
Five men from the Atlin district claim they were escorted toward Washington to file grievances with the state department after being driven from rich claims. The leader says their party was ambushed by Canadian officers disguised as Indigenous people, who tried to kill them for their gold. He reports numerous bodies of American miners found along the road who were slain for their money.
Seattle Aug 21 The Roanoke arrived from St Michael with 350000 on board. J W McDonald of Seattle led the richest Klondiker group. G W Price from Cape Nome brought 31600 to stake. A niece of Admiral Schley from Montgomery Als reportedly held 10000. R G Dunn head 10000.
Fremont Frey returns from the International Typographical Union convention in Detroit. He says the long effort to move headquarters from Indianapolis has faded with no discussion at the meeting. President Samuel B. Donnelly presided for the first time. The headquarters handles about 320000 in annual work for local unions. Delegates included Robert H. Grubbs and Edward P. Barry.
The Big Four telegraphers refuse to disclose any status about their request to restore wages cut below 50 a month years ago. They report no word from Big Four officials yet.
The first of the new 12 seated double trucked street cars will have its debut run on city tracks Monday night starting at 7 80 from the Grand Hotel. The car will carry several company guests.
