Officer Calvin M. Warren, wounded, shot and killed James Birch after Birch fired repeatedly during a struggle in 513 W. Washington St. Birch had terrorized residents, previously murdered in Louisville, with Warren praised for bravery and Bir ch's wife charged with intoxication. Coroner rules self defense. Warren’s arm and chest injuries appear survivable.
In Rennes the Dreyfus court martial resumes with M. Labori back at the bench after an Aug 14 assassination attempt. Mercier faces recall questions on a forged letter while Dreyfus defends himself, praising Labori and criticizing witnesses amid a tense courtroom mix of applause and scrutiny.
The Big Four engineers who have been in conference here with Grand-chief P. M. Arthur went to Cincinnati Monday evening. A conference is planned with Mr. Schaff on Tuesday and, if unsatisfactory, another attempt will be made to see President Ingalls. Distant mutterings of a strike are noted but no danger is believed imminent.

About 5 p m Monday two intoxicated men on a South Meridian street car sparked a scene at McCarty street after wrangling with the conductor. One man swung at the conductor, a second joined, and Tom Montgomery of the Board of Works pleaded for restraint. The motorman used a switch-hook to threaten order as the car halted and a monkey wrench was produced to aid. The assailants fled as bystanders cried police with one man dragged toward Pogue's ocean while another disappeared in the crowd.
The Bar association met in the law library Tuesday morning and passed resolutions of respect for Ralph Hill who died Sunday. Hill was a member in good standing and Charles W. Smith delivered an earnest eulogy praising the late lawyer’s character.

City controller John son sold 150400 dollars of bonds to Marchant National Bank for 164496.76. Bonds dated Sept 1 draw 32 percent interest, principal payable starting Jan 1 145. Proceeds fund new Fall Creek and White River bridges and other repairs. Bids came from major firms in New York Chicago and Cincinnati. Total city bonded debt reaches 2165.40. debt limit near.
