The primary in Indianapolis featured heated battles across wards with Billy Schmidt and Ross Hawkins among those defeated. Ring tactics and cross-precinct voting sparked accusations as Bookwalter’s slate secured key delegates while irregularities and side-door balloting drew protest. A fall from a horse injured Bookwalter, yet he pressed on amid tight precinct contests.
Saturday morning reports show Bookwalter supporters claiming 33 of 70 delegates in Ransdell’s ward and six to eight switching from Bookwalter to Ransdell. Ward 15 supporters cried “skinned ’em” while Ward 1 and Ward 6 setbacks hit Baron Rothchild, aided by Attorney Weaver. Credentials committee, hearing 36 contests, reported to Chairman Legsdon after 11. The primaries drew lively participation as John R Allen named delegates from his precinct, drawing laughter for placing Bob Adams and W E Stanieton on the slate.

James F. Lamb, superintendent of the American District Telegraph, was fined $5 and costs in police court for collecting a ten cent delivery fee on within city limits telegraph messages. His attorney pled guilty and appealed. The case spurs a broader challenge by the telegraph companies to an old ordinance. The new messenger boys union, led by Roy Johnson, demands higher pay and threatens strikes. State inspector McAbee calls for refunds of unlawful fines from the past two years, with AG action possible if unmet.
Indiana state supervisor Frank Jones returned from a 750 mile tour of county institutes. He delivered 16 talks and plans a winter study of country schools visiting 200 to 200 little red school houses to inform recommendations for the next legislature. He urges a nine month term and higher country tax support with redistribution to aid rural schools.
Subscriptions for Porto Rican storm relief total 108 65 dollars with P G Jordan in charge. A substantial amount has been pledged though no funds yet at the Board of Trade building. A car load is planned to ship early next week from contributions by William Haueisen and others including N Chambers, J Lymas Jones, A A McKain, H Lieber Co, Hon C W Fairbanks, T B Laycock Manufacturing, T J Hamilton, Mrs O H Calvin, and others totaling 108 65 dollars.
The 55 Indiana cities with 2000 population or more report real estate values and improvements for 1898 and 1899. Thirty two cities rise by 8.8 million dollars, twenty three fall by 5.7 million, net gain 3.14 million. Indianapolis accounts for nearly 4 million of the rise. only platted lots counted.

John E. Horton of Indianapolis was found at Fort Thomas by his stepfather William H. Johnson on Friday afternoon. Horton had vanished three weeks earlier claiming he would visit his wife in Muncie and later bought a Cincinnati ticket. A letter to his wife said to write care of Cincinnati general delivery as he planned to leave the country. His mother and stepfather watched the delivery window until Johnson learned from Fort Thomas enlisted men that Horton was with a soldier and his wife. Horton, remorseful, did not recall his enlistment, and officials said the government cannot hold him if he falsely claimed to be unmarried.
A mining company employee Gerald Rives from Sonora near the Yaqui reservation says the war will be long and bitterly contested with Yaquis out in force and well armed. No news from Wicam for a week, wires cut. Official reports call each minor skirmish a glorious victory. Casualties remain light as Torres awaits reinforcements.

Washington Aug 1 The president appointed commission reports yellow fever is caused by bacillus icteroides discovered by Prof Sanarelli of Bologna Italy. It is spread by respiratory route with primary lung infection often followed by secondary infection. No link to Sternberg bacillus. Iteroides is highly susceptible to injurious influences and can produce a potent toxin in vitro and in vivo. Potential for stronger antiserum noted.
Indianapolis hosts a trio of new incorporations. The Rio tropical planters' association forms to trade in Indiana and Mexico real estate and to produce coffee rubber sugar cane and tropical fruits with 209 000 capital. Griffith & Northern railway company plans ten miles of track from Griffith to the Chicago Lake Shore and Western line with a 200 000 capital. Goyert Vogel erg and poultry company forms in Cincinnati with 32 499 capital.
A youth with rolled trousers was arrested by Detectives Asch Dugan Gerber and Morgan while trying to dispose of a bicycle on East Washington. He offered it to “fly cars” for eight dollars, gave contradictory stories, and was taken to police headquarters where he proposed to buy the bike from a desk sergeant. He gave the name Henry Kingan of Marion and was found with a loaded revolver.
U S commissioner Wishard sought more input from the treasury department on several features of Indiana law governing condemnation. He does not expect a final order condemning University square until a reply arrives to his current answer.
The Aquatic club will stage a marine demonstration at Broad Ripple next Saturday. All craft that plow the White River will be in service and the parade will be near the park docks for easy viewing. Afterward the club will anchor on the river’s west side and organizers will offer land lubbers a chance to row for prizes.
Samuel W. Eckman of Indianapolis serving in the United States Army in Porto Rico describes a cyclone's devastation. He notes half the houses ruined, crops destroyed, widespread suffering, and rivers carrying bodies downstream.
Secretary Root has leased the residence at 1626 Rhode Island avenue in Washington opposite the former home of General Sheridan near Dupont Circle. The move marks his choice of lodging in the capital as he continues to serve in his post.

The Yale Review, New Haven Conn, Aug 19, publishes an editorial urging the United States to end the war in the Philippines and place Reginaldo in control. The piece is said to be inspired by Yale University figures President elect Hachey and Prof. Schwab.
The Manila edition of Freedom reports the first independence day celebration with Consul P F Williams of Rochester delivering the Fourth of July oration. He praised expanding American ideas, free speech, church, schools, press, and citizens before courts, and predicted American influence would promote justice worldwide.
Gen Bates reopens talks with the sultan of the Sulu islands after a Saturday conference with the sultan’s brother. The American draft includes sovereignty recognition, slave freedom purchase, and military land use with compensation. The sultan concedes on religious liberty and local customs, signaling possible finalization.
A letter from a regular army officer at Iloilo dated June 28 is cited by a War Department official. The letter says American holdings in the islands are measured by acres not provinces and warns movement outside entrenched lines is dangerous. Manila’s outer lines were three miles out in May and insurgent rifle fire pierced Malate houses. The officer criticizes Gen Otis and calls for 100,000 troops.

Michael Sharkey age 49 of 1433 English Ave died at 11 30 am Friday from brain fever. He worked as a bailer maker at the Big Four shops and was affiliated with the Hibernians. He leaves a widow and six children. Funeral at St Patrick's Church at 9 2 0 Monday. Warthes jewelry ad appears at end.
