Thousands mobilize for county GOP rally in the big event led by Chairman Mack. Delegations from districts gather for parade and daytime speeches at Franklin Hall with Hon. Matthew and other prominent Republicans, while preparations and decorations unfold. weather could affect turnout as efforts push to surpass past election crowds. Budgeted aides and marshals coordinate arrival times and route ahead of a 1 o’clock march.
Saturday drew a large Republican turnout in Heshbon with a 75 foot flagpole raised and three cheers as the colors rose. Squire Y. Lynn chaired the new committee after a gathering that featured Debu McGaughey speaking on protection and sound money, with W. L. Hutchison and McGaughey singing a campaign song. The event followed recent McKinley and Hobart poles in Cherryhill and a large outdoor mass meeting addressed by Frank Keener John H. Pierce and Ed Moorhead as the party presses its county campaign efforts.
A grand Republican rally is planned for Friday afternoon and evening in Indiana County at the County Courthouse area. Delegations from all townships and boroughs will attend, with Matthew Stanley Quay possibly presiding as chairman. Addresses planned by A B Kelly of Philadelphia, Lt Governor Walter Lyons of Pittsburgh, State Chairman Elkin, and others on campaign issues.
The McKinley and Hobart marching clubs will parade in uniform as brass and martial bands meet delegations. An imposing procession with fireworks is set for the evening. Chairman Mack aims for an old fashioned demonstration reminiscent of Lincoln era festivities.
Two more diphtheria cases are reported this week among Otis and Rose, children of Prof. W. S. Trainer, Indiana school principal. The cases are mild and under Dr. J. M. Torrence. Trainer has confined the disease at home, living at the American House since the illness began. Morris, another son, has jaundice with no diphtheria symptoms.
Meade son of Mr. J. M. Marshall of Fourth ward fractured the elbow during a Monday football game. Dr. J. M. Torrence reduced the fracture and fears a stiff arm. Also, Messrs. Feit and Ewing were appointed borough solicitors of Blairsville.
Supervisor David Daugherty of Cherryhill township was thrown from a buggy when his horse bolted along Diamondville road last Saturday. He suffered three fractured ribs and was treated by Dr. T. D. Stephens of Penn Run. The same article notes a separate altercation near Rochester Mills where Stewart Richardson struck Horace Hudson with a club, causing serious head injury and prolonged unconsciousness.
A joint Democratic and Populist gathering attracted a crowd at the Court House last evening. Jerome T. Ailman, national officer of the Farmers Alliance and Industrial Union, delivered the address.
A Henry Myers daughter on the ridge above Homer City was wounded when a 32 caliber revolver discharged in a room where her brother Bert was playing with it. The bullet hit her left breast near the heart, lodged in the wall, but she is recovering under Dr. J. G. Campbell care.
Mrs. Rev. Given and her daughter Annie were injured at Rochester Mills when a cow attacked them during milking. Mrs. Given was knocked down and gored near the breast, her daughter’s abdomen was torn. both survived though seriously hurt after the incident. An unrelated line about Death Caused by an Apple appears in the report.
A three days roll call and reunion service at East Mahoning Baptist near Purchase Line drew large crowds Friday through Sabbath. The event featured a history read by D R Hank, noted eight surviving original members, and tributes to former pastors A B Runyan and M L Rowland. Pastor W P Hile led sermons and revival spirit.
On Saturday Ideal day for football, Johnstown Athletic Association defeated the visiting team. The match ended 6 to 5 as play was halted at 2 15. Normal showed stronger play in the last half, but neither side scored after halftime. Alfred Lee, noted at Normal in 1899, served as manager for the visiting club.
