Prominent eastern steel operator Joseph Wharton purchases the Indiana Coal and Coke Company plant from Harry McCreary. The deal includes 24 coke ovens, 250 acres, 520 acres of underlying coal, and railroad sidings. Wharton plans $100000 in improvements, adding 126 ovens, water works, tenement houses, and a storeroom to push a daily 350 ton output for iron mills in the east.

Mrs Malisea C Hoover died suddenly at her Rockford home due to heart trouble. Born 1840, she married Henry C Hoover in 1858 and lived near Georgeville before moving to Iowa about 15 years ago. Mr D M Caldwell a leading town clothier has been named quartermaster of the Fifth regiment by Colonel Elder. A longtime National Guardsman he enlisted April 10, 1888, rising from private to corporal, sergeant, and sergeant major. He served as inspector of rifle practice, briefly resigned in 1898, was reappointed 1899, and during the Spanish American War held roles as battalion adjutant and acting ordnance officer.

Child's play costly as powder can explodes injures trio
A three year old named Harvey Doran dropped a lit match into a powder can at J Harveys store in Blairsville on Saturday causing an explosion that injured the child and a man named Charles Mulvyehill. The store was partly wrecked and plate glass shattered. Doctors initially feared eye injury but now think blindness unlikely.
