Lamar attacks Hepburn law and judge Swayne case
In Washington on February 9, Representative Lamar of Florida denounced the Hepburn railroad rate law as defective and urged a provision to let the Interstate Commerce Commission act to correct rate wrongs. He also condemned Judge Charles Swayne as a “rascally judge” despite acquittal, deeming the Florida judiciary contaminated. The Senate passed the Indian appropriation bill and the House set a high pace, approving 725 private pension bills in about ninety minutes, as the naval appropriation bill of $95,426,000 was considered.

Cars Not Storehouses Harriman Blames Shippers for Congestion
Harriman, head of the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific, said railroads lack enough cars for shippers and that customers use cars as storehouses. He suggested limiting car use to reduce delays and even floated the idea of seeking a job with the Interstate Commerce Commission. In Ossining, New York, the Montreal Express hit a freight train, killing the engineer and fireman and injuring several passengers.
