The Free Methodist congregation plans a new one story house of worship on the lot of Mr. H. B. Weaver on East Church Street. The structure will measure around 66 by 16 feet. Contractor P. N. Jinkerlinus has secured the bid and work will commence next week.
Sheriff Mack went to Blacklick on Monday and arrested Aaron Devinney and his son Gill for carrying concealed weapons. The father and son are regarded as dangerous and have issued threats to neighbors. Both men gave bail.
Reported declines in expected harvest emerge as farmers note damaged crops and missing bills amid economic strain. Local officials assess losses at county level, while growers express concern over reduced output and rising costs.
RECENT DEATHS. Mr Martin Hoover a resident of Cherryhill township died at his son Andrews home in Brushvalley on Wednesday aged about td years. He was a Winebrennerian church member and funeral services were held at his sons home and burial at Manor graveyard Cherryhill township. Survived by wife and five children Mrs William Nyvy Homer City Mrs Caldwell Stahl Homer City Roser Pittsburg Mrs William Boucher Homer City Karvod Vittsburg and Andrew Brushvalley township.
Mr James Bush of near Marchand died at his mother's home last week after a long cancer struggle. The disease began in the face, spread across the head, and led to the removal of his right eye. He was about 50, unmarried, and had earlier received treatment at Adrian. He was laid to rest at Gigel churchyard Wednesday after services by Rev Hoffman of Minnion Center.
William Gallagher of Green township near Utah died Saturday after a long illness. He was 78 years old with 6 months and 14 days. He suffered years of delicate health and mental weakness. Surviving are his wife and children Sample Gallagher Barneshboro Mrs Robert Calhoun Mrs John B Reed Mrs Rush Laney Mrs A J Lydick and Mrs Sloan Buterbaugh all of Green township. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon by Rev Bell with interment in the Taylorsville church graveyard.
Mrs Isaac Tiger of Canoe township died suddenly on Monday at age 37 years 1 month 17 days. Her husband awoke about 4 am called to her but she did not respond. He lit a lamp and found her dead, death attributed to heart disease. Several children mourn the loss of a mother.
John Kesslar of West Mahoning township died Thursday morning at about 70 years old from general debility. He was survived by a wife and three sons. Funeral services were held at his home Thursday evening by Rev. Streamer of Smicksburg. Interment followed in Punxsutawney the next day.
Bolivar resident Mr. Jacob Shank dies aged about 38 from consumption. Son of Jacob Shank formerly of White township, he lived here until moving to Bolivar four years ago. Survived by wife five sons and a daughter. Remains were brought here Saturday noon and buried in Greenwood cemetery.
A group from White township gathered Monday at Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McSpartin home to celebrate Mrs. McSparin’s 66th birthday. Neighbors surprised the honoree with a noon crowd, dinner on the barn floor, and speeches from A. T. Taylor and K. E. Gibson. The festivities included gifts, social games, and cheerful amusement.
The county teachers list was completed after Saturdays election in Pine township. Directors chose Nolo, Lawrence Williams, Mary Shaffer, Rhodes, Burns, J. Bert Holsapple, H. Clara Sterner, Calvin Steffy, Thom as Conrad, 5. B. Sides. Wages set at $26. School opens September 5.
Maud Woodweaver of this place filed information before Squire Fenton on Monday accusing William Job of Waterstreet of a serious crime. Constable Wettling arrested Job on Tuesday and confined him in jail.
Constable Wettling arrested George Neal of near Jacksonville on Wednesday on a serious charge preferred by Emma Shank of Center township. Neal is remanded on bail.
Old Soldiers Own Marchand and Marion Center host the fifth annual reunions of the 74th Regiment. Capt. G A McLain presides as officers are elected for next year. Marion Center hosts Company A veterans with a flag purchase planned, a full program of reminiscences and speeches, and a camp fire by the M E church. The piece recounts company history from 1861 through Civil War actions, deaths, and reorganizations.
The County Christian Endeavor society closed its most successful convention with well attended sunrise and afternoon sessions. Leaders Frank Walker and W R Mahaffey spoke on Abiding in Christ and Strength for Service, then President Leard praised the Washington Convention. A question box, junior rally, and pledge discussions followed, ending with consecration and a benediction.
The eighth annual Endeavorers convention closes with praise and hope as young lives are inspired for right living. The local Lutheran church society wins the county banner for enrolling the most active members during the year.
More than one hundred neighbors gathered unannounced at Mrs Susannah Taylor’s Armstrong township home on Thursday. They elected J T Henry president and Hallie Wachob secretary, presented Mrs Taylor with a rocker and zona lounge, heard speeches from Rev W J Wilson and others, and left the grateful mother and son surprised by the well planned event.
The Prohibition County Convention met at the Court House on Tuesday afternoon and nominated a full ticket for the coming general election including J. A. Baer for Congress from Punxsutawney Charles Irwin for Senate from Bix Run Jefferson County J. H. McMillen for Assembly from Ambrose and G. H. Warren for Assembly West Mahoning township Lowry Cameron for Sheriff A W Mevallough for Prothonotary William T. Hamill for Treasurer J P Lytle for Commissioner and Joseph Henderson for Auditor Crete for Coroner J B Adair. Mr W A Dible of Parkwood chosen county chairman and Henderson of Crete secretary. Evening addresses were given by Rev E S Littell of West Lebanon and Rev Belsey of Geneva Ohio.
Central District Printing and Telegraph Company paused work Monday to erect poles for a new telephone exchange until an ordinance grants right of way. A prior permit from four years ago is revived by the new borough laws, and notice was served Tuesday morning. The company has 10 subscribers including A. H. Apple H. K. Apple B. F. Last Monday afternoon Judge White appointed D. L. Moorhead Moses T. Steele and Milton Work viewers to lay out the Mottern road in North Mahoning township. Exceptions to the sale of James Brown's 150 acre Real estate in Young township named Moorhead McIntire Hart as appraisers, with P. M. Hodge as administrator to notify them. Benjamin Gilhousen named collector of Buffington township replacing R. M. Barclay who resigned. Writ of lunacy issued for Robert Wilson of South Mahoning township. jury to be drawn in the second week of September court, on Wednesday September 23.
Mr William A Hauxhurst wed Miss Bell Pierce daughter of Joseph M Pierce of the Third ward at Rev J Day Brownlee's home on Thursday afternoon. The couple already occupy a new home near the fair grounds.
Mr. Harry W. Oberlin of Rochester Mills and Miss Luella M. Leasure of Canoe township will marry tomorrow at the bride's home. Rev. Devor of Rochester Mills will perform the ceremony.
Mr. E. E. Ritchey and Miss Lottie P. Wilson, both of Smicksburg, were married at the Clawson House parlors on Wednesday by Rev. W. P. Hile of Purchase Line.
Mr. D. M. Lowery and Miss Ella Syers, both of Rochester Mills, were married on Friday by Dr. Hall, of this place.
Mesers John M. Daugherty Dr J M Knowlton and Ray Kessiar left Monday evening for New York state to hunt and fish in the Adirondack mountains for several weeks. They expect to return around the middle of next month.
The Republican Congressional Conference met at Kit tanning and selected Hon. E. E. Robbins of Greensburg on the sixty ninth ballot. His nomination came with support from Jefferson and Armstrong county conferrees and was made unanimous after a brief session. Other speakers included T. D. Cunningham, A. C. White, and Congressman Heiner who pledged loyalty to Robbins.
More than 200 descendants of the late Rev. Samuel Conrad gathered at William S. Conrad’s Buffington township farm to reconnect. Rev. M. M. Sweeny Rev. Bunyan and Rev. Bergman spoke after a communal noon meal, as an organization formed with John Stephens as president and H. M. Stewart as secretary.
Rev Herbert M Clarke recently graduated from the theological school has accepted a call to lead the Corie Episcopal base church and will assume charge late next month. He will oversee both the Indians and Blairsville churches with Archdeacon A D Brown of Pittsburg to conduct services at the usual time on December 6 and Rev Coale to occupy the pulpit thereafter.
