Three County Conventions To Convene In September

Three major county gatherings are planned soon for temperance and church groups. Plumville hosts the Women’s Christian Temperance Union with a multi day program August 18 to 21, Blairsville hosts the Indiana County Sabbath School Association August 20 to 21, and Marion Center hosts the Indiana County Christian Meadeaver Union on September 16 to 17, featuring speakers music and officer elections.

Fatal mine explosion harms foreign workers near Lockport

An explosion at the Climax Coal and Coke Company mine in Wheatfield Township opposite Lockport killed Peter Surwesti and injured two other foreigners during a blasting operation. Surwesti, blinded and mutilated, was helped by companion Lewis Peryzi who, though sightless, aided by binding the wound and providing first aid before both were evacuated to a hospital where Surwesti died a few hours later.

Chautauqua Opens With Music and Lectures Today

The Chautauqua opens today at the Third Ward school grounds with The Carolineurs, noted musicians, in renditions and a lecture by Hon. George L. Alden. Daily schedule starts at 9:00 am with lectures at 10:00 am, 2:30 pm, 3:00 pm, and 7:30 pm, followed by evening entertainment at 8:15 pm. Season tickets are $2 for all shows, with guarantors covering expenses if fewer than 1000 are sold.

Coal Washer Burned at Wehrum Factory

A large coal washer at the Lackawanna Coal Company plant in Wehrum county was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon. The structure was the county’s largest of its type and prompted a call for aid from Indiana and Johnstown firemen, though the flames were brought under control before they arrived.

George T. Buchanan, proprietor of the wholesale grocery store on Church street, plans a five-story brick warehouse to be erected in the rear of his present building. The structure will be fireproof and equipped with every convenience for conducting an up to date wholesale business.

Indiana County Fair Race Program and Purses Announced

The county fair race program for September 9 to 11 lists events in trot and pace divisions with purses from 300 to 4100 dollars. A. Newton Kelly aged 63 former Blairville resident and Pennsylvanial Railroad conductor died at his Springdale home. Widow Abigail Kelly and daughter Grace survive. Remains moved to Blairsville for interment. Also, Mrs. William Stiver died at 47 after sudden illness following a walk. Survived by husband and several children.
