Coal land purchases expand Indiana County mines
The Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal and Iron Company will pay on over 1,000 acres in Center and Blacklick townships as part of a major coal land expansion. Attorney John A. Scott will oversee the first payments to landowners next week, with ten tracts totaling over 20,000 acres adjoining existing holdings. Separate deals include purchases in Banks and Montgomery townships and a coke plant contract near Graceton, with 150 workers to be employed. Major figures include J. Clark and H. E. Clark of Glen Campbell and J. O. Clark, alongside Harry McCreary and Joseph Wharton financing expanded operations. The field spans Conemaugh to Armstrong townships and Kiskiminetas and South Bend, while Keystone Coal plans further prospecting east of Indiana.

Three Injured When Team Flees at Station
A buggy team owned by D. M. Henry, tied at the station, was startled by a passing train Friday morning and bolted along Philadelphia street to Fairview. One horse suffered a deep gash to a rear leg, the buggy was damaged, and Mr. Henry was thrown out but escaped injury.

Deaths in Grant township and area noted
Recent obituary notices record the death of Leonard Shryock McCune of Grant township on Friday April 12 at 2 50 p m after illness since last November. He was born in Indiana on April 16 1820 and moved with his family through Armagh Saltsburg and Cherry Elk township. He cleared a Grant township farm rebuilt after fires and served as a noted auctioneer. He leaves eight children twenty two grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Interment followed at East Mahoning Baptist church cemetery. Also listed are Mrs Kate L Woods aged 75 and six other siblings and relatives. Archibald Henry died of erysipelas at 85 and Robert Coursin of Bolivar died of heart disease leaving a wife and six children. Interments conducted in local sites.

Several costly blazes burn two dwellings and sawmill
A fire destroyed John Parlor's home in Tadia West Wheatfield township after 4 pm on Saturday. Sparks from a windy blaze endangered the India schoolhouse, but citizens saved it. Barns and a large sawmill at Nickletown burned early Saturday, with losses around 1500 to 1500. James Lewis's Purchase Line residence also perished, most household goods lost and no insurance.

Bicycle Thief Arrested After Station Break In
Constable Jacob Wettling arrested Ben Eddy at Penn Ran on a larceny charge filed by Station Agent D A Cunningham. Eddy, about 19, is accused of breaking into the railroad station two weeks ago and stealing Miss Galvin's bicycle, with parts hidden on another bike and the frame repainted. Miss Galvin identified the frame and other parts. Efforts to recover the missing parts continue. Eddy has prior time in Morganza Reformatory.

Blairsville Schools Begin Commencement Activities
Blairsville public schools plan commencement next week starting with a bac calaureate sermon at Blairsville Presbyterian church by Rev. C. F. Sander on Sabbath eve. Graduation for the grammar school follows Tuesday evening and the public school exercises are set for the next night. Wednesday features Prof. A. M. Scanties rise along the line as crews prepare for deep fills near Griffith's summit and Marion Center. Extensions toward Indiana and the coal fields along Blacklick Creek are eyed if right of way costs are favorable. A Board of Trade meeting may be called in May to push the project forward.
